Helmer, Gordon Franklin
Nov 18, 1928 – Nov 18, 2018
Never one to pass up a good party, Gord hung on until his family had gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday, then peacefully slipped away a few hours later. Predeceased by his wife Fran in 2011, he is survived by his sister Marion Hough and his children, of whom he was fiercely proud: Paula (Jeff Christie), Alan (Lee), Ian (Tracey) and Truda Baines (Dave). He was known as Grandpa, Papa and sometimes Grumpy by his grandchildren Rob, Emma, Alan, Jesse, Jenna, Dalton, Maddison, Jack and Luke and great grandchildren Cole, Leah and Marissa. Gord & Fran welcomed family and friends to “1952” for nearly 45 years and many wonderful memories were made in Dad’s backyard oasis. He was a longtime member and past president of the Strathcona Legion. The family is grateful for the tender loving care Gord received these last several months at The Osgoode Care Centre. Special thanks are also extended to Lulu at Windsor Park Manor, Dad’s home for the past 9 years. Friends and family are invited to gather at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 26 for a memorial service at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa.
