OBITUARY
Gertrude “Gert” Elizabeth McManus
25 August , 1935 – 17 May , 2018
MCMANUS, Gertrude Elizabeth, RN, 82, of Halifax.
Passed away peacefully at home on May 17, 2018 surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness. Gert was born in Halifax to the late May (Brow) and Gerald Tobin.
She was educated at College St. School, Convent of the Sacred Heart and graduated from St. Martha’s Nursing School, Antigonish in 1957. Gert was a lifelong member of the parishes of Canadian Martyrs and St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. She dedicated herself to the service of others, which included volunteering for over 25 years at the Dianna H. Bleakney Guild, NS Cancer Centre, Halifax, and over 15 years at the Spencer House Seniors’ Centre, Halifax. Mom always liked to say that she received more than she gave.
Gert is survived by her children, Patrick and Kathleen, both of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. McManus, sisters, Mary Josephine Ahern, Helen Patricia Mielke and brother, Gerald.
Visitation will be held at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, on Tuesday, May 22 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Owen Connolly and Rev. Albert Cosgrove at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Spring Garden Road, Halifax on Wednesday, May 23 at 10 am. A reception will follow in the church hall.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit, VG especially Monica Flinn, RN and Patti MacDougall RN, the VON, and her very special caregivers Veronica, Kelly and Anneika for the loving care they gave to Mom.
