It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Eleanor V. Cawker (nee Sweetman) of Oshawa, who peacefully succumbed to the cycle of life on Tuesday September 11th, 2018 in her 87th year. As always was the case, she left in the presence of her loving and adoring family. Eleanor was born in Port Perry on December 3rd, 1931 to Stuart and Mary Sweetman. She was an older sibling to Carol, Keith, Thelma, Bev and Peter and eventually became the wife, confidant, book keeper, trusted advisor, and beloved life partner of John Alan Cawker. Their union yielded six adoring children, Andy (Anne), Michael, Lea (Dan Kitchen), Scott (Jo-Anne), Mark (Cindy) and Christie. They each sport tears today, but their grief is somewhat blunted by the love and admiration for a woman who was simultaneously loving and kind yet bold and courageous when necessary. She nourished our immediate eight like a 5-star chef on a shoestring budget, encouraged and enabled us to pursue a plethora of activities, comforted us during tough times, always made us feel safe, and inspired us with her voracious appetite for books and her abundant curiosity. Eleanor was a nurturing and highly involved grandmother to her 16 grandchildren. Valerie, Andrea, Klane, Sarah, Aaron, Ashleigh, Martina, Jessica, Whitney, Bronwyn, Madison, Samuel, Bethany, Hillary, Chelsea and Samantha will forever carry uniquely fond memories and miss her greatly. Recent branches on the family tree sport Eleanor’s seven great grandchildren, Paisley, Chevy, Avonlea, Holland, Hendrix, Leland and North, the final chapter of her proud and impressive legacy. It pains us to know that she won’t enjoy another stroll through the neighbourhood with her furry four-legged friends, relishing conversation with neighbors along the way, spend another enjoyable afternoon watching her beloved Blue Jays, conquer the daily crossword, host another special family Christmas, cheer unabashedly for Tom Brady and the Patriots, finish another adventure via the pages of her latest novel, or squeeze us tight with one of her many affectionate hugs. We do, however, celebrate that she was able to enjoy and share these moments for the entirety of her cherished time with us. In keeping with her joyful spirit Eleanor didn’t wish for friends and family to mourn for her at a traditional funeral, but to celebrate her life well lived. Feel immense gratitude that she touched your life; I know that we certainly do. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation as a means to honour Eleanor’s memory.
