Obituary for Dr. Murray Martin
MARTIN: It is with great sadness that his family announces the peaceful passing of Dr. Murray Martin at Fairview Personal Care Home on Friday, August 17, 2018. Reginald George Murray Martin was born on January 18, 1932 in Asquith, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest of the five children in the tight-knit family of Reginald and Violet Martin. Murray grew up with his brother Len and sisters Elaine, Frances and Zelda on the family farm near Juniata, Saskatchewan. His farming background gave him a life-long love of animals and led him to pursue a career in Veterinary medicine. In 1951, he left home to attend the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario. By his own admission, Murray was not a natural student, but he threw himself into his studies with the same energy and determination that he brought to every task he attempted. He put himself through University by taking a series of challenging summer jobs and was by turns a logger, a coal miner, a construction steeplejack and a pipeline worker. It was at Guelph that he met, fell in love with, and eventually married Audrey Morrison, another veterinary student. This began a 60 year partnership that combined careers, a family and a loving relationship that ended only with Audrey’s passing in October of 2015. Murray and Audrey began their marriage and their veterinary practice in Canora, Saskatchewan in 1955, and welcomed their first son, Kim, to their family in October of 1956. Realizing that there was not enough small-animal work in a rural practice to make use of Audrey’s skills, they moved to Brandon in 1957, where they established the Martin Veterinary Clinic. The family grew again in February 1959, with the birth of their son Christopher. For the next 19 years the Martins ran the clinic together, with Murray handling the majority of the farm and large animal work and Audrey specializing in pets and small animals. Audrey retired from the practice in 1977 and the following year Murray sold the clinic and began a new career as a veterinarian with the Federal Health of Animals Department, working in the district office in Brandon, and Dauphin, and as the Supervising Veterinarian at the Burns Meats plant in Brandon. Murray retired from full time veterinary work in 1997 but continued to do contract work for various agricultural organizations for another decade. He also kept busy with a small ‘hobby’ herd of cattle he maintained for years, caring for the family’s bevy of Pomeranian dogs, and taking part in his favored past-times of hunting and horseback riding. Murray was a family man, loyal and supportive of his family and very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Audrey, his parents Reg and Violet, and his brother-in-law Wayne Morrison. He leaves behind his son Chris, his son Kim and wife Karin; their children Kathryn and Kirsten (Kira) Martin, Kirsten’s partner Francis Webb, and their children (Murray’s much-loved great-grandchildren) Evelyn (E.E.) and Theodore (Teddy). Murray is survived by his brother Dr. Leonard (Jean) Martin, and sisters Elaine Martin, Frances (Frank) Zerr, and Zelda Martin. The family would like to extend their grateful thanks to the staff of Second Floor, Fairview Personal Care Home for the care and compassion they showed dad during his time there. A Memorial Service for Murray will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon, MB, on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in memory of Murray may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R7A 0V9, The Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6, or to Funds for Furry Friends, Suite 208 – 740 Rosser Ave., Brandon, MB, R7A 0K9.
