Douglas Everett Sawyer 2018

OBITUARY
Douglas Everett Sawyer
June 1, 1926 – December 4, 2018
Age 92, of Halifax, Liverpool and Chester, died on Tuesday, December 5, 2018. Doug was the son of the late Nellie Blanche (Heckman) and Bernal Wyman Sawyer.
Doug attended Halifax schools and graduated from Dalhousie University and the Technical University of Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree. He worked for GE in Toronto for a few years and then returned to Halifax where he worked at Ben’s Limited 25 years as the General Manager. His first wife was Barbara Moir. They had two daughters, Barbara Lynn and Nancy Joan. In 1966 he married Shirley Farquhar and shared 50 years of marriage. He and Shirley loved travelling and golf and they were always on the lookout for bridge players to make a foursome. Their summer house at White Point Estates in Liverpool gave them much enjoyment for many years. When they sold their Liverpool property they downsized to a condo in Chester where they embraced new friendships and community for several years. Doug had a long relationship with the Professional Engineers Association of Nova Scotia. He participated in many conferences and conventions associated with the baking industry. Work was a huge part of his life. He took great pride in the quality of Ben’s bread, the efficiency of the equipment and perhaps most of all the skill and dedication of the employees who worked there. In his younger years he curled and was a member of the Halifax Curling Club. His Halifax golfing took place at Ashburn Golf Club, which is where he met Shirley. In Liverpool, they golfed at the Liverpool Golf Club. For several years, they spent cold winter months in Lakeland, Fla. Doug was predeceased by his parents, and an uncle and aunt, Ernest and Lyda Moir who raised him; his former wife, Barbara; and infant daughter, Nancy Joan; his wife, Shirley; and his brother, Bernal and sister-in-law Freda. He is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Paul Bezanson) and nieces, Marion (Jeff) Ross, Kentville; Gwen (Bill) Maden, Halifax; Karen (Colin MacKay) Sawyer and Doreen “Ginger” (Tim) Stoddard; Shirley’s niece, Susan (Carl) Demmons and family; several grand nieces and nephews.
Doug’s remains have been cremated. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax where visitation will be held on Friday, December 14th, 1-3 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave., Halifax on Saturday, December 15th at 1 p.m. Family flowers only.
The family wishes to thank the various nurses, caregivers and doctors involved in Doug’s care, particularly as his illness progressed. In lieu of flowers, in memory of Doug go for a walk in the woods or on the beach and make some memories. Donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
