Obituary for Donald “Bill” William Redden
D. William “Bill” Redden, – 88, Upper Stewiacke, NS, died at home on February 1, 2018, on his beloved farm with his family at his side. Born in Timmins, Ontario on August 3, 1929, he was the son of William K. and Susan (Reid) Redden. Bill moved to Upper Stewiacke on his 13th birthday in 1942, when his dad and mum fulfilled their dream to return home to Nova Scotia to farm. They purchased Lawkland Farm, where he lived for 76 years. He graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1948 and worked at Fulton-Hickman’s store, the Upper Stewiacke Co-op, and Ryan’s IGA, all while continuing to farm Herefords and grow strawberries. He returned to work at the Co-op, managing the hardware department until his retirement in 1990, and continued to farm until age 85. He was an Elder in the Upper Stewiacke United Church for 48 years, and served as a Steward, Trustee, Truro Presbytery and Maritime Conference Delegate. He was a General Leader and leader in the Stewiacke Valley 4-H Club, an original member of the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society, the Stewiacke Valley Doctor’s Residence Society and the North Nova Astronomy Club. He was an innovative life long learner, evident in both his work and living. For him it was one in the same. His love of history of the land and the people who lived before him shaped who he was. Love of community and family was his guide. Love of quantum theory was the spirituality that connected it together. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Ronald, sister-in-law, Mabel (Chaplin); brother-in-law, Addison Neil, and grandson, Ronan Redden-Geddes. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 56 years, Lydia (Miller); children, Shawn, Bill and Corinne, grandchildren Breanna (Rob) and Liam, brother Michael Redden (Barbara), sister-in-law Helen (Miller) Neil, and many nieces and nephews. His family will be wearing something yellow, Bill’s favorite color, and invite others to do the same. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Murray, Dr. Courtney Smith, Dawn Ross, RN, the VON, the staff of Village Pharmacy for their compassion and care, which Bill and his family greatly appreciated. Visitation will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 4 at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with funeral service at 3 p.m. on Monday, February 5 at the Upper Stewiacke United Church, Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. Interment to take place in the Spring at Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke. Donations can be made in his memory to the Upper Stewiacke United Church, Colchester East Hants Palliative Care Program or Doctors Without Borders.
