Domain Skoretz
March 2, 1929 – June 6, 2018

Domain Skoretz of Saskatoon and formerly of Buchanan, SK, passed away at the Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK on June 6, 2018, at the age of 89 years.
Domain was born on March 2, 1929, on the homestead 6 miles northeast of Rama, the second of three children to Alex and Anna (Okrainetz) Skoretz. He received his education from Wolna School, Mohyla Institute in Saskatoon, and eventually a trade school in Saskatoon, where he became an electrical technician. Because of this trade skill, he repaired radios and televisions, and also wired various homes. Additionally, he worked at CFJC Radio Station in Kamloops, B.C. After his father’s passing, Domain moved back to the homestead farm, where he and his wife, Lillian, began their life together. They raised four beautiful children: Dale, Denise and twin daughters, Laurie-Lee and Laureen-Lynn. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children. Fencing pasture was all done by hand, and every fence post was pounded by hand as well.
Daddy, as he was known to all his kids, always found time to have wiener roasts with the willow sticks he carved, trips to Sandy Beach and sliding down the sand dunes, or getting the ice cleaned for skating.
Proud of his Ukrainian heritage and language and having a strong Ukrainian Orthodox faith, Domain continued to share these values and traditions with his children. Domain taught his son, Dale, at an early age to drive the tractor and operate the farm equipment. After graduating school, Dale worked at Leon’s in Yorkton but also helped on the farm. When the ranching operation became too large, Domain asked Dale to return home, and together as family, they worked the cattle farm.
Domain and Lillian worked very hard on the ranch, as raising cattle was both their passion and livelihood. Domain enjoyed nature. Every spring he would bring pussy willows into the house. He even enjoyed calving season, despite having to put his parka and winter boots on during the night. He enjoyed mushroom picking and used his cap as the pail.
It was a difficult day for the family when due to developing dementia, Domain left the farm and moved to Luther Care Home in Saskatoon, SK. Dale continued to work the ranch, which is now a Centennial homestead. Domain had a passion for music at an early age. He taught himself to play guitar and harmonica and could play by ear. He recorded music with friends in Vernon, BC. Domain enjoyed Ukrainian and country music, participated in jam sessions, attended live concerts, and listened to taped music. Even with dementia, when the music played, Domain would have a smile on his face and his foot would be tapping to the music.
