On Friday, March 9, 2018, at the palliative care unit at the Campbellton Regional Hospital, Dr. Dennis Jerome Furlong passed peacefully. He leaves his loving spouse, Pierrette Arseneault, and family: sons: Denny (Shelly), Sean (Michelle), and Robin (Dawn); stepdaughter, Josée (John); and grandchildren: Jena, Cody, Hailey, Olivia, Ava, Lilyan, Jace, and Jaxen.
Dennis was born to Edward and Loretta Furlong (deceased) of St. John’s, NL, on July 22, 1945. He attended St. Bonaventure’s College along with his four brothers: Edward (deceased), Robert, Patrick, and Garry, and three sisters: Dolores, Madelyn and Eleanor (deceased). While at St. Bon’s Dennis demonstrated diverse and exceptional academic, educational, athletic, leadership, and extracurricular abilities. Graduating from Brother Rice High School (St. John’s) he continued his studies at the University of New Brunswick where he further pursued his interests. Following a short period teaching in Newfoundland, Dennis earned a Masters of Science Degree at the University of Oregon and a medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He then set up medical practice in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, where he served the community as a physician, the Province as President of the New Brunswick Medical Society (1988-1989), and Canada as President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1985-1986). Later in his career, as an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick (1999-2003), he represented the people of Dalhousie-Restigouche and the people of the province as Minister of Health and Community Services (1999-2000), Minister of Health and Wellness (2000-2001), and Minister of Education (2001-2003). In 2005, he led the Agent Orange Inquiry at Gagetown, NB, and in 2007 chaired the New Brunswick Trauma System Advisory Committee). Dennis was also instrumental in bringing the Canada Winter Games to northern New Brunswick. As an author Dennis published a book on the Canadian Health Care System entitled Medicare Myth: Fifty Myths about the Canadian Healthcare System (2004). In addition, he received: the Canadian Medical Association’s Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Action and was a CMA Senior Member, the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, and the NBMS Order of Merit. Dennis was honoured by his alma mater with an Honorary Doctor of Laws at the University of New Brunswick. As an inventor, in 1981, ahead of his time, Dennis designed and built a spacious passive solar-heated home that stored energy from the sun in an indoor swimming pool. Adding to his inventions, he earned a National Research Council Grant to develop a ground contact monitoring device for Olympic race walking. In keeping with his lifelong passion for athletics, he competed in the Canadian Senior Games, winning gold. “Higher, Further, Faster, and Stronger” was his approach to everything. Participating in the Pan-Am Masters Championships in Vancouver, BC, representing Canada and New Brunswick, Dennis competed in the decathlon achieving the top score in the event, a New Brunswick provincial record in the 70-74 year old master’s class.
In Dennis’ own words: “I have been blessed with a wonderful profession. I have been privileged to care for others who hold the medical profession in high esteem.”
Dennis’ family wish to express highest regards and deepest appreciation to all who expressed their love, their support, and their condolences during and after his recent illness. His family extends special thanks to the community of Eel River Bar First Nation for hosting the celebration of his life.
A celebration of Dennis’ life (Traditional Mi’gmaq Ceremony) will be held at the Aboriginal Heritage Garden Facility at the Eel River Bar First Nation on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM followed by a visitation/reception until 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society would be very much appreciated.

Ce vendredi, 9 mars 2018 aux soins palliatifs de l’hôpital Régionale de Campbellton, est décédé paisiblement, Dr. Dennis Jerome Furlong. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Pierrette Arseneault, ses fils Denny (Shelley), Sean (Michelle) et Robin (Dawn), également la fille de son épouse Josée (John). Il laisse également ses petits enfants : Jena, Cody, Hailey, Olivia, Ava, Lillian, Jace et Jaxen.
Dennis était le fils de feu Edward et Loretta Furlong de St-Jean Terre-Neuve. Il est né le 22 juillet 1945. Il laisse également dans le deuil, ses quatre frères : feu Edward, Robert, Patrick et Gerry, et ses 3 sœurs : Dolores, Madelyn et feu Eleanor.
Après avoir fréquenté le Collège St Bonaventure avec ses frères, Dennis alors qu’il demeurait à St. Bon`s avait démontré d’exceptionnels talents au niveau académique, éducationnel, en athlétisme, beaucoup de leadership et d’extraordinaires habilités. Gradué à l’école Brother High School (St-Jean, TN.), il a ensuite poursuivi ses études à l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick ou il a étudiés dans ses différents points d’intérêts. Pour une courte période de temps, il a enseigné à Terre-Neuve. Dennis s’est mérité une maitrise en science de l’Université d’Oregan et a ensuite obtenue sa formation en médecine de l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve.
Il a ensuite ouvert sa pratique médicale a Dalhousie, au Nouveau-Brunswick, communauté qu’il a desservi jusqu’à sa retraite en 2016.
A cette époque il est également devenu président de la Société Médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick (1989-1988). Il avait déjà occupé le poste de Président national du Collège des Médecins et chirurgiens, (1985-1986). Plus tard au cours de sa carrière il est devenu membre de l’Assemblée Législative du NB, (1999-2003). Il a aussi représenté la population de Dalhousie-Restigouche comme Ministre de la Santé et des Services Sociaux (1999-2000). Puis Ministre de la Santé et Bien-être (2000-2001) ensuite Ministre de l’Éducation (2001-2003). En 2005 il dirigé l’enquête de l’agent orange a Gagetown, NB. En 2007 il siège sur le comité aviseur sur les traumas pour le NB. Dennis fût un meneur pour apporter les jeux d’hiver du Canada dans la section nord du NB. Comme auteur il a publié un livre sur le système des soins de santé canadien concernant les ¨medicare myth¨ , LES 50 MYTHES AU SUJET DU SYSTÈME DE SOIN DE SANTÉ CANADIEN (2004). A cet effet il s’est mérité le : SIR CHARLES TUPPER AWARD, pour son action politique et est devenu membre senior du CMA. Il a également obtenu le mérite du club Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, et l’ordre du mérite du NBMS. Dennis fût reçu également Membre honoraire et docteur de l’ordre de la loi à l’Université du NB. A titre d’inventeur en 1981 avant-gardiste qu’il était, il a dessiné et bâtit une maison à l’énergie solaire passive qui permet d’emmagasiner l’énergie solaire dans l’eau d’une piscine intérieure. Par cette invention il a gagné une subvention du Conseil National sur la recherche afin de développer un système de moniteur sur le terrain pour un sol olympique de cours a pied. Toute en poursuivant sa passion pour l’athlétisme, il est allé en compétition au Jeux Canadiens pour les seniors, gagnant du coup la médaille d’or. Pour lui, sa devise était PLUS HAUT, PLUS LOIN, PLUS VITE, PLUS FORT. Sa participation au Pan-Am Masters Championships, de Vancouver, C.B. en 2016 comme représentant du Canada et du Nouveau-Brunswick, Dennis a complété le décathlon en accomplissant le plus haut pointage de l’évènement, un record pour le Nouveau-Brunswick dans la classe des maîtres âgés entre 70-74 ans.
Dans ses propres mots il dit¨ J’ai été béni par une extraordinaire profession, j’ai eu le privilège de avec ceux qui font de la profession médicale un point de la plus haute importance.
La famille de Dennis désire exprimer leur plus grande appréciation à tous ceux qui leur ont offert du support lors de sa maladie, et vous remercie pour les condoléances reçu. La famille désire particulièrement remercier la communauté de Eel River Bar First Nation pour être l’hôte de la célébration de sa vie.
Cette célébration de la vie de Dennis (cérémonie Mi’gmaq traditionnelle) aura lieu au Aboriginal Heritage Garden Facility at the Eel River Bar First Nation ce mercredi 14 mars 2018 à 2:00, suivi d’une visite et réception jusqu’à 6 :pm.
Au lieu de fleurs, un don à la Société du Cancer serait très apprécié.
