David Sidney Price (AKA Beanie) passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.
Left to cherish David’s memory are his wife, Ingrid Price; children, Tyson Price, Rysleah Price, Aurora Price, Neils Kaczoroski, Matthew Bilous, and Elayna Bilous; grandchildren, Alexander, Hayden and Lucas Kaczoroski, Issabella Livingston, Zinnia Calverley, and Rain Price; brother to Cecil Price Jr., Frances Gboizo, Ronald Price, Louise Price. He was predeceased by his parents, Caesar (Cecil) Price Sr. and Lear (Leila) Montgomery.
Born in New York, NY 1952 in the borough of Manhattan. David grew up in the city the middle child of five. Even from a young age he showed the patience, kindness and joy that so many people admire about him today. David graduated from Haaren High School in June of 1971 and his basketball skills took him on a journey ending up in Oklahoma. Eventually being brought to Brandon Manitoba, Canada by Jerry Hemmings to become the first American recruited Brandon University Bobcat (1975-76) also playing for the University of Calgary Dinos (76-79). In his time playing University ball he was an All-Canadian twice and a Gpac all-star. David settled in Winnipeg and quickly became a popular face in the community coaching baseball, basketball, as well as reffing and umping throughout the province. He also had his own painting company Priceless Painting and Decorating. David Price was seen at most every Manitoba sporting event sideline cheering/coaching. From his section O seats watching and cheering/dancing for the goldeyes, getting massages from Goldie to his regular Blue Bomber seats, also cheering on the Moose and the Jets. From junior high to the university level he was always cheering/coaching even while reffing basketball. David was a sideline staple at the Westman Classic every year as well as every other tournament in the city of Winnipeg. He was an important figure in everything he did and such a mentor for all young and old. David was everyone’s favourite ref, ump, painter, usher, volunteer and all-around human being. If you grew up in the Rouge you would often see him in the neighborhood, bigger than life talking to everyone. He would always take the time out of his day to just say hello, and make you feel special. David Price would always selflessly put his needs behind the needs of others. He enjoyed his time on and off the courts, touching each life he came into contact with. David took great pride in his community, and Lord Roberts Community Centre was another home, where he volunteered his time to mentor the new generation. Among other places, David was a long time referee with the Manitoba Basketball Association, volunteered at Rainbow Stage, volunteered at The Meeting Place, and for the Immigrant Centre of Winnipeg just to name a few. He was a member of the KPAC, Winnipeg 1 and MBOA officials associations and worked games from the youth community level up to the MCAC College level and everything in between. He volunteered his time as a coach at a variety of levels and as an official with the Balling for the Cure Basketball Tournament and Special Olympics Manitoba among others.
Our family has decided to start this fundraiser (gofundme/David-Price-memorial), so that his honor may live on in the community he loved so dear. We would like all the funds to be donated to Lord Roberts Community Centre in David Price’s name. Hopefully even naming the gym after him. Fort Rouge, Winnipeg, New York and the world will always remember David Price and he will be missed by all.
