THOMPSON- Charles
Passed away peacefully on October 26, 2018 at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford. Devoted husband of Ethel (née Hipkin) for 63 years. Loving father of Pam (Kevin), Charles, and predeceased by son Clark (Marian). Loving grandfather of Brendan, Claire, Conor (Summer), Jesse, Ryan, Alexandra and Megan, and great grandfather of Jacob. Charles was born on August 11, 1928 in Windsor but always felt most rooted in the Bruce Peninsula. After his father died when Charles was six, he and his sister Joyce and brother Clark were raised in Chesley, Ontario, by his mother Jessie. Charles left Chesley after high school but always retained a strong love for the towns and countryside of his youth. He took his children and their children back to Sauble Beach for many summer vacations. Charles attended Waterloo Lutheran University and then obtained his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario. He married Ethel in his final year of medical school and then did his residency in Hamilton. Charles decided to continue his schooling and in 1960 he and Ethel moved to England, with two small children, to pursue a degree in Ophthalmology at the Birmingham Eye Hospital. They returned to Canada and in 1965 Charles established his practice as an eye doctor in Brantford, where he practiced for the next 30 years. Charles will be remembered as a patient and caring doctor, a devoted family man, a dedicated member of St Mark’s Anglican Church for over 50 years, a member of the Brantford Golf and Country Club and the Brant Curling Club, and a good friend and neighbour. He loved travel, family get-togethers, good books, gardening and history. He was a clever, curious and witty man who was always devising ingenious solutions to whatever task needed to be solved. He was a role model for his family and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Hankinson House and Bayshore HealthCare for their loving care. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at McCleister Funeral Home followed by inurnment at Farringdon Burial Ground. The family will receive friends at a memorial reception in the Hospitality Suite at McCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME, 495 Park Rd N, Brantford on Tuesday November 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If wished, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stedman Community Hospice – Hankinson House or St. Mark’s Anglican Church.
