Althea Maude Saunders 2018

OBITUARY
Althea Maude Saunders
22 August , 1918 – 22 May , 2018
Althea Maude Saunders lived for almost a century, and witnessed more generational change in her own life and in the world around her than few could ever imagine. But what have always remained are her love for family, her faith and her tender heart.
On May 22, 2018, she was called to heaven to be reunited with family she had longed to see again.
Althea, 99 of Digby, N.S., defined elegance and grace. She loved her family above all else and her loyalty to them never wavered. Her support and acceptance wrapped around each of her family members and brought them comfort and confidence.
Althea was born on Aug. 22, 1918 into a large family in Riverdale to parents Leroy and Lizzie Belle (Mullen) Wagner. Love was the cornerstone of the Wagner family, and Althea had a close relationship with her siblings that lasted a lifetime.
Althea married and spent her life with her true love, the late Lindstol Saunders. The couple was blessed with one son, the late Graham Leroy Saunders, whom they loved purely and unconditionally. With her infectious smile and warm embrace, Althea doted on her son and, later, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was an accomplished swimmer who could glide from one end of a lake to the other without rest. Intelligent and extremely well-read, she exuded confidence and knowledge. After becoming an LPN in the late 1950s, she quickly earned the respect and admiration from peers at Digby General, where she helped train many nurses. She also owned and operated Saunders Jewellery with her husband in downtown Digby, and was recognized for her volunteer effort during World War Two. Forgiving, warm and thoughtful, Althea was a woman of faith who lived her life according to higher principles and was a shining example of a life well lived.
Truly beautiful on the inside and out, she will be dearly missed by her surviving siblings, Vivian Cossaboom, Reta Thurber and Myrtle Theriault, Eileen Wagner (sister-in-law to siblings), daughter-in-law, Jacqueline (Richard) Levy; grandchildren, Cheryl Longmire (Neville Elms), Scott Saunders (Fern McCuish) and Stacie Saunders (Kelly Powell); granddaughter-in-law, Su-Ellen Saunders; great-grandchildren, Graham Saunders, Mary-Ellen (Reid) Southwick, Colby Longmire and Fallon Longmire; and great-great-granddaughters Farrah and Norah.
She is predeceased by her husband, Lindstol Saunders; son, Graham Saunders; grandson, Mark Saunders; sisters, Erma Kaminski, Hilda Morehouse, Melba Morehouse and Carol Hall and brothers, Nevins, Kenneth and Darrell Wagner.
A memorial service will be held in her honour at the Digby Baptist Church (2 Mount St.) at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018. A reception will follow. No flowers are requested, but donations in her memory can be made to the Baptist Church and VON. Leave condolences at www.jaynesfuneralhome.com
