Abram Toews, age 77, of Steinbach, MB, formerly of Paraguay passed away Sunday morning, November 18, 2018 at his home.
He is survived by his wife Anna of 56 years, children: Fred (Alwiene) Toews, Erna (Willie) Wiebe, Martha (Erdman) Klassen, Eva (Ben) Klassen, Netty (Will) Bergen, Lina (Darcy) Sproule and Herbert (Lisa) Toews and 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is survived by four
sisters and three brothers.
He was predeceased by his parents Bernhard and Katharina Toews and step-mom Maria Durksen, four brothers and two sisters.
Abram was born to Bernhard and Katharina in Chaco, Paraguay on January 29, 1941. He was raised on a farm and enjoyed working with his tractors later on in life. Abram was baptized in 1962 and got married on August 10 of that year.
In his earlier years, he was known as a tease to his siblings and friends. He was an easy-going guy who loved to laugh and joke around. He moved around a lot and the places where they lived was in the Colonie Menno and the Colonie Neuland. They moved to Bolivia and thought they should start a new village. That lasted only a few months then they moved back to civilization and then back to Paraguay.
After four daughters got married in one year, they decided to move to Canada in 1988 for the first time. Dad was a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy. A farmer, tractor operator, truck driver, bricklayer, laborer and a handyman. Some of his hobbies were building wooden toys and playing his harmonica. His last working years were spent at Loewen Windows until, due to his health, he had to take an early retirement.
Within the last year, they took one more opportunity to go to Paraguay to see their children, grandchildren, siblings and old friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Krahn, palliative care nurse Deborah Krahn, homecare Ginette Morgan and the staff for all their love and care they provided in the last while of dad’s life.
The funeral service for Abram Toews will be held on Thursday, November 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, with viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
