John Newton Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we share that John passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff for their care and kindness.
Born on October 19, 1943, John is predeceased by Lorraine, his wife of over 56 years. John will be missed by his daughter, Heather, and by Lorraine’s brother, Howard, and his wife, Nadine. He will be remembered fondly by nephews Brian (Sharry), Richard (Louise), Dave (Lynne), Don (Joanne), and Ed (Cindy), as well as family friend and unofficially adopted daughter, Claire. He will also be greatly missed by Heather’s dog, Penny, who made it her mission to make John fall in love with her, and succeeded spectacularly, despite him insisting he wasn’t a dog person.
John and Lorraine lived in Henderson all their lives before moving to Bowmanville in 2022 to be closer to Heather, but it is safe to say that Henderson — and the house and yard they nurtured and cared for for so many years, nestled in a community full of family and neighbours who became family — continued to be home in their hearts.
John had a long career with the civil engineering firm Totten, Sims & Hubicki. John conducted pre-engineering work and supervised job sites across the region, including close to home on the Arden Road, and for many years on the Buckshot Lake Road at Plevna. In the latter part of his career John worked on the replacement of several overpass bridges along the Kingston to Trenton stretch of the 401. John’s penchant for being very precise, whether calculating the slope of a bridge approach, cutting lumber to build a gazebo for Heather (which will be standing long after the century home falls down), or even baking a Birthday Cake, made him very well suited to his work.
Despite working long hours, John enjoyed fishing and spending time on Big Gull Lake where his parents had owned a summer resort as well as cross-country skiing, skating, walking, riding the motorcycle he bought after hiring Don to work with him one year, kayaking after Heather introduced him to that, and of course, hunting. John and Lorraine enjoyed visiting Heather in Bowmanville, leaf peeping tours to the Algonquin Park area and occasional trips to Niagara Falls. Visits from Heather’s friend, Claire, who became like a daughter to them, were always a highlight for them.
Heather has two favourite stories about John. The first involves him facilitating the romance between his older sister, Gwen, and his school teacher come brother-in-law, Gerald, by couriering notes between the two. John and Gerald would become good friends and get involved in shenanigans that neither Brian nor Heather would ever consider telling anyone about if they had been the instigators. The second story is about John’s love of animals. After several years without a pet, John convinced Lorraine that they should get another cat, specifically a white Persian, like the ones in the toilet paper commercials. As luck would have it, there was an ad in the paper and the perfect kitten was located and aptly named Cuddles. Around that time, John developed an odd rash. His doctor thought it might be measles, but it didn’t resolve. Time went on and John and Lorraine took the kitten to the vet for his shots. The vet took one look at John’s hands and arms, and without being asked, announced, “You’re allergic to your cat.” So John had the pet he had dreamed of — he just couldn’t touch it. (Eventually he did become desensitized, thank Goodness!)
Visitation for John will be held at Goodfellow’s Funeral Home in Parham on Monday, May 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Henderson United Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Henderson Cemetery Fund.
