Surrounded by the love of his family, Jim peacefully left this world to be with his Saviour on January 30, 2025. Jim was born June 21, 1949 to Paul and Helen Zurbriggen of Elgin, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Becky (Cann) of 47 years, daughter Heidi (Brian Neufeld), son Tim (Jasmine), and cherished grandchildren Zackery, Ella, Zoé, and Annabelle. Jim also leaves behind his brother Tom, and extended family and friends throughout Canada and the USA. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Bob.
Jim grew up in Elgin, Iowa where he enjoyed baseball, football, fishing, and music. He was privileged to have extended family living as neighbours and enjoyed small town life. Jim received his Bachelor of Arts from Upper Iowa University. He then went to Prairie Bible College, in Three Hills AB where he taught grade school and then took a year of Bible studies. It was there he met his wife, Becky, they were married in 1977. Following this, Jim attended Sioux Falls Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity. In 1979, Jim and Becky moved to Killaloe, ON to pastor at Calvary Baptist and First Baptist churches. While here their children Heidi and Tim were born.
In 1992, Jim and his family moved to Oakbank, MB where he was associate pastor at Oakbank Baptist Church. In 2004, Jim and Becky moved to Portage la Prairie where Jim took on a new position as principal and teacher at Austin Christian Academy. Always a lifelong learner, it was during this time Jim completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba. Upon his retirement, the pull of grandchildren moved Jim and Becky back to Oakbank. Over the following years, Jim found fulfillment in substitute teaching in Portage la Prairie and the Oakbank area.
Throughout his 75 years, Jim enjoyed cycling, skiing, reading, daily walks, and board games. With family scattered throughout Canada and the US, Jim made many road trips across the continent to visit friends and family, taking the time to explore new places along the way. In 2013, Jim fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and Becky visited Switzerland, the country of his family roots. Jim’s faith and family were central to his life, and he lived to exemplify his beliefs. His church families were very important to him, and he was active in his church community; leading Bible studies, Awana, singing in the choir, attending prayer group and Sunday School.
Jim’s gentle leadership, generous heart and soft-spoken wisdom will always be remembered by those he has left behind.
Thank you to the staff at HSC and the Riverview Health Centre (stroke unit), who provided excellent care to Jim over the past two months. The family is also grateful to the many friends who have shown their love and support in tangible ways during Jim’s hospital stay.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
A memorial service for Jim is planned for Friday, February 7, 2025, at 1:00 at Oakbank Baptist Church.
