With quiet resolve, Ebenezer ‘Abe’ Marshall passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the age of 90 years, leaving behind a legacy built on grit, resilience, and a lifelong bond with the land and animals he worked alongside. Born on May 31, 1934, in Scotland, Abe was raised on the family farm, Breconside, just outside of Kirkgunzeon. It was there, in the rolling green fields, that his lifelong bond with farming and rural life began. He carried that spirit with him when he immigrated to Canada, seeking new horizons and opportunities. Abe, or to his oil patch friends, ‘Scotty’, worked tirelessly – first on farms and later in the oilfields as a rig push with Hightower Drilling, before finally fulfilling a dream of his own, purchasing a piece of land outside of Bowden, Alberta. There, he established a farm where he raised cattle and sheep and built a life grounded in quiet contentment and steady purpose. In his later years, Abe found joy and companionship in working with border collies. He was especially fond of training and trialling the dogs, sharing a wordless connection with them that seemed to speak volumes. Abe enjoyed the simple pleasures – a well-kept garden, the rhythm of the seasons, and the calm of a life well-lived. Never one to seek the spotlight, he found satisfaction in the quiet successes of each day.
He was a proud and devoted father to Heather (Mike) and Scott (Kara), and found deep joy in watching his grandchildren, Coleson, Ellis, Olivia, Abe, and Bennett grow and thrive. Their visits brought him laughter, stories, and no shortage of mischief, all of which he relished. Abe was the last of the Marshall brothers and was predeceased by his parents, Ebenezer and Mabel Marshall. A Celebration of Abe’s Life will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025 at the Bowden Friendship Center, 2133 – 18 Avenue, Bowden, Alberta. Please come for coffee and tea between 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take a quiet moment to enjoy a garden, walk a dog, or simply admire a well-tended fence line—Abe would have liked that.
