David Albert Jarvis – Gone Too Soon
April 12,1956 – April 22, 2025
Survived by his wife Jean (nee Howson) and cherished son Kristofer (Catrina), and the light of
his life, his granddaughter Penelope. He is also survived by his brother Michael, brother-in-law
Ross Howson (Jane), nieces Katie (Alex Thompson), and Sarah (Christopher Hedley), and
nephew Matthew (Brittany). David was predeceased by his father Edward Jarvis and mother
Margaret (Harwood) Jarvis/Gilchrist/Carr.
Born in Port Hope, Ontario, David’s early years took him to Owen Sound, Brampton and finally
to Flesherton where his family owned and operated The Fort Garry Motel. In 1985, David and
Jean made Thornhill their home, where they raised their son Kristofer and where not a day went
by without David reminding him, “I love you, son.”
David had a natural gift for working with his hands and he was endlessly curious. In 1978, he
graduated at the top of his class at the Fanshaw College Advanced Industrial Training Course for
Motor Vehicle Mechanics. David was destined to become a brilliant master mechanic,
specializing in snowmobiles, farm equipment, automobiles and high rail machinery. His career
led him from the Markdale Garage to CN Rail, and then to Action Equipment Services Ltd.,
where he worked with pride until 2024. David and Kristofer worked side-by-side for the past 15
years. David became a leader in his field. He developed innovative ways to diagnose mechanical
problems and apply new solutions to repair vehicles and high rail equipment. David’s approach
to every challenge was the same: Go to bed with the challenge at hand and wake up with the
solution!
While David could fix anything, his gifts extended far beyond mechanics. David embraced a
wide range of interests. He loved music and, as a young man, he played the saxophone. He was
also a champion curler and chess player at Flesherton High. Still, if David could have won an
award, it would be for being late every day to high school even though he lived just across the
street. David also loved to fly and at 22, he aced his pilot’s exam at Buttonville Airport. He spent
many of his hours as a pilot flying his friends around. Later, he found joy in competitive darts,
winning many tournaments alongside his teammates.
He was a passionate sports fan, especially of Nascar, Formula 1, Indy and well anything to do
with racing. He never missed a race no matter what time it aired. He got Jean hooked on Nascar.
Above all else, David shone brightest as a grandfather, known affectionately as Dido to
Penelope. Their bond was pure magic: visits were filled with laughter, silly games, and endless
giggles. David delighted in seeing Penelope off to daycare each morning, a ritual that made his
day’s shine. In their honour, a tree will be planted in the family’s front yard, lovingly named
Penelope/Dido, a living symbol of their special bond.
Family, friends and colleagues will remember David for his meticulous craftsmanship, his
compassionate heart, and his inimitable sense of humour. He was, simply put, a good man, the
kind you were lucky to know. He was a caring soul who left the world better than he found it.
We will love and miss him always.
