Charlotte A. “Dolly” Currie
“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love. »
– St. Therese of the Child Jesus
_____
Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and always a staunch advocate for the betterment of her family, “Dolly” (Charlotte) Currie left the world January 20, 2025 as she entered it – As A Force of Nature!
A loyal daughter of Cape Breton, Dolly was raised and greatly loved in the household of Joe B. and Annie Gouthro of Dominion, a place she and her own family would return to every summer for 72 years.
Marrying her sweetheart Greg Currie in 1950, the couple would raise four children and celebrate 74 years together October 26, 2024.
Early life saw Dolly and Greg starting life and family on Cape Breton before Greg joined the military in 1954, where their lives and growing family would see a number of postings before finally settling in Petawawa in 1968.
Beginning her working life as a registered nurse, Dolly would later change career direction becoming a newspaper editor with the Quebec City Chronicle and eventually The Pembroke Observer.
Losing her eyesight at age 39 did not deter Dolly’s fierce determination to overcome obstacles; ultimately returning to school to pursue and earn college diplomas in Business Administration and Social Work.
Always a purveyor for the greater good, Dolly was a devout Roman Catholic, serving with the Catholic Women’s League for more than 50 years. Other volunteer activities included the C.N.I.B., Girl Guides of Canada, and the Red Hatters.
Dolly was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, lovingly referring to her descendants as her “garden of roses”.
She is the loving and devoted mother of Shirley (Matt), Sonya-Adell (Charles), Wilfred Bernard (Vivian), and Dana-Gouthro (Donna).
Grandmother to Shelley (Kevin), Shawn (Tammy), Trevor, Shannon (Maribeth), Tessa (Chris), Jody (Chloe), late Ryan (Rebbecca), and Joshua.
Great Grandmother to Brandon, Nicholas (Vanessa), Jessey, Alexander, Tylor (Meghan), Keenan, Emma, Thalia, Ben, Asher, Emmeline, Caleb, Thomas, George Dana, Malcolm, and Isla, and great-great-grandmother to Leah.
Special Aunt to Joe Steele and Calvin MacIvor.
Mom, you were the heart of our family, the one who held us all together. We’ll miss your love and guidance. You’re in our hearts always.
Forever “39”, Mom leaves us with 91 years of experience!
