Marcia Louise (Ricketson) Higgins
1929-2025
Marcia Louise Higgins
– 95, of Kentville, gently passed away on Sunday January 26th in the
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Wing at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital
in Middleton NS.
Born in 1929 in
Carleton Corner, NS, daughter of the late J. Walter and L. Beryl
(Hayden) Ricketson.
Marcia was the loving
wife of the late Robert « Bob » Higgins for 53 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Debra (Gordon) Poley of Edmonton; three
sons: Kevin (Lorraine) of Centreville, Darren (John Bailey) of
Toronto, and J. Paul (Meredith) of Duncans Cove; five granddaughters:
Rebecca (Mitch) Moore, Raquel (James) Griffin, Robin, and Rose Poley,
and Zella Higgins; four step-grandchildren: Kris (Adam) Legge, Joel
(Kristi), Ruel (Malori), and Bret Garby; six great grandchildren:
Annabelle, Nora, Everly, Piper, and Juliette Moore, and Guinevere
Griffin; seven step great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Jared and Morgan
Legge, Addisyn, Evan, Amara, and Lily Garby. Marcia was also survived
by a brother John (Diane) Ricketson and sister Audrey (John) Wade, as
well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marcia was predeceased
by her brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Dorothy Ricketson as well
as two children in infancy.
Marcia spent a
childhood spread between Carleton Corner, Fredericton NB, and
Bridgetown NS. She developed a passion for education and being able to
enrich the lives of children with her bright and positive demeanor.
After graduating from Bridgetown High, Marcia was off to the
Provincial Normal College in Truro where she was soon placed in a
teaching position in Nictaux Falls and then Yarmouth before moving to
her longtime home of Kentville.
Marcia was an
elementary school teacher at Kentville elementary before she
transitioned to raising her family and volunteering full time.
Although she left the teaching profession, she never stopped being a
teacher and helped to instill a passion for education in all her
children. Marcia was an incredibly supportive and caring mother.
Sitting through endless concerts and sporting events, her children
always knew she would support them through anything. This was good
practice as she loved taking on the roles of grandmother (grammy) and
great grandmother (GG).
Marcia had many close
friends in her life, forged in her years of teaching, decades of
Monday morning bowling sessions, Thursday night bridge games, her
daily walks with friends, and frequent volunteering wherever she was
needed. Marcia was as happy to bake some of her well-known treats for
a bake sale as she was to canvas door to door to help raise money for
charities. Her community spirit was acknowledged by the town of
Kentville in 1987 with a « Volunteer of the Year »
award. Marcia supported Bob as he served as camp director at YMCA Camp
Wapomeo in Yarmouth NS for many years, where many lifelong friendships
were forged.
With a large and
bountiful garden on Henry Street, Marcia, was never one to complain
about the significant volume of fruits, berries, and vegetables that
she would expertly process and use to create delicious meals and
desserts. She inspired all her children to enjoy cooking and showed
them how it can bring family and friends together. Her family would
marvel at what she could assemble for weekend and holiday meals, but
it was maybe her soups that she was best known for.
Marcia loved to travel
– family road trips, European vacations, visiting friends throughout
North America, visiting Debra and family as they moved around the
Maritimes and to Alberta, visiting with Kevin’s family at
his family cottage in Lockeport NS, and a Caribbean cruise and trip to
Mexico with Darren. Marcia was an avid Blue Jays fan and attended Blue
Jays games with Paul and Meredith. Marcia and Bob also travelled with
her siblings to Summerville Beach, Keji, Barbados, Portugal, and the
Appalachians. Marcia loved chronicling those trips to help put a quick
end to any debate of details of the trips. She, her siblings and their
spouses had great fun playing Turkey Toes, discussing gardening, their
children, and their shared faith in God.
Marcia dedicated much
of her life to supporting and enriching the community around her. As a
devoted member of the Kentville United Baptist Church, Marcia served
as a Deacon, Teller, Usher, as a member of the Vision Committee, and
as an Inter Church Council member. Marcia participated in the Ethel
Fenerty Women’s Missionary Society at church and was a Life
Member of the United Baptist Woman’s Missionary Union of the
Atlantic Provinces. Marcia’s faith in God was foremost in
her life. Prayer, reading scripture and being a witness of her faith
brought great comfort to her and to those around her. Marcia was a
devoted member of the Kentville United Baptist Church since
1957.
Music played a
significant role in Marcia’s life. It brought her immense
joy to sing and play piano. Marcia loved practicing piano, most often
when her children were watching TV. The practice was put to good use
as she regularly played for seniors at long-term care facilities.
Marcia was a mainstay in the Kentville United Baptist church choir for
over 60 years without losing a beat along the way. We can still see
her tapping her finger and bobbing her head to the
music.
Cremation has taken

Cremation Services, Kentville. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m.
