Obituary For Wendy Virginia Foote
March 7, 1948 – May 22, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the prolonged, yet sudden, passing of Wendy Virginia Foote (Connell) on May 22, 2023. She was fortunate to spend the final days, hours, minutes and seconds surrounded by those who she cared most for.
Wendy Virginia was 5th born March 7, 1948 in Stettler AB to Weller and Dorothy Connell. Shortly after the birth of Wendy, the family relocated to Wanham Alberta, where their family roots really developed. Wendy had 4 older siblings and was graced with 3 younger. Sandra, Bobbi, Joan, Tom (Wenche), Peg (Fred), Jack and Alan (Lynn) were all gratefully able to reconnect with Wendy and take part in a living wake a few short days before she spread her wings to fly.
Wendy grew up in Wanham before she graduated from the U of A in Edmonton with a Teaching degree, where she taught grade 1 for many years. Wendy resided back in Wanham, where she brought Tyson and Tanya home to raise in the same small town where she was raised. When times were tough for Wendy, she chose to make lemonade with the lemons and welcomed Rhonda and Harmony as family, when she connected with her soulmate Terry. Terry and Wendy’s bond was stronger than this lifetime, and they never skipped a beat. After welcoming Becky into the picture in 1985, the Foote/Sather clan became a thing from that moment on.
Wendy and Terry immediately started a life together, investing in the Wanham Service Station. Wendy would always greet the strangers just the same as the regulars; old friends who were able to catch a coffee. Wendy and Terry moved to a farm east of Wanham located in Belloy AB. There they built a house, with intentions for a lifetime. They took on grain farming with family, later to purchase their very first alpacas as hobby farmers. Wendy loved her alpacas, knowing each by name, having a special connection with each and every animal she owned. She for many years, showed the alpacas at trade shows, spun their fibre and advocated just how great the animals really were. Wendys passion developed into the iconic “Paca Nana’s” side business of the peace country with all her handmade alpaca products. Terry and Wendy had many friends in Wanham, that to this day, still have shown support throughout their lives. They sold the farm in Wanham in 2000, and moved and continue to reside in Spirit River AB. They raised alpacas, right up until just last month.
They started a Trucking Company early 2000’s, only to have sold and enjoyed their retirement together for the past 5 years. Wendy and Terry were inseparable, going everywhere together, even quilting club! They enjoyed their time spent at Riverstone, with their river family, including one of Wendy’s favourite pastimes of sitting around a campfire jamming and singing to guitars. Terry and Wendy travelled and adventured, mostly from one end of the province and back to drop in and spoil each of their 5 children, but their hearts were actually with their grandchildren. Wendy was blessed to have 11 grandchildren who called her Nana. She created a special bond with each of them.
Wendy had, and still does have, 3 very special friends she could always depend on. They often referred to themselves as the “Golden Girls” and that they were. They supported each other through many life events, and knew no matter what, each one was just a call away. Wendy always was the key to connection, and made the effort to stay in touch with those she cared for most. She was always available when needed and you could always depend on her, whether it was advice on how to cook a turkey, or a ride home from a party. She was good to the core.
Wendy often enjoyed sharing childhood memories from her siblings, most often wreaking havoc with Peg and Tom. Wendy was close with her brother Oop (Alan) and Lynn, and she and Terry often ventured with them making memories, watching ball or even just playing cards.
Wendy was very talented, not only with crafts, but the ability to make anyone feel at home. Wendy was a playful person, who was full of wits and punny jokes. Even in her final moments she was thinking of others and actively trying to make them smile. She will forever be remembered for her perfect homemade buns, butter that the kids swear is better than anything, and the love she shared for her family and friends.
Wendy will endlessly be cherished by her partner in crime of 40 years, Terry and their perfect pooch Mabel. As well as her children Rhonda (Brian) Yurchyshyn, Harmony (Shawn) Sipma, Tyson (Erin) Sather, Tanya (Kelly) Sawatzky and Becky (Paul) Boissoneault. She will also be missed by her greatest prides of joy: Mackenzie, Daelyn, Bayden, Grace, Kody, Jackson, Torrence, Trenyn, Owen, Weston and Krosby.
As per her wishes, she never wanted anyone to be sad on her behalf, so we will be hosting a Celebration of Memories on July 29, 2023 at the Wanham Hall. Details to come.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society,#204 10134 97 Avenue Grande Prairie AB T8V 7X5 or the cancer society of choice.
We would like to extend our utmost appreciation to all of the health care providers, especially Dr. Wolfaardt at the Central Peace Health Complex and Dr. Hattingh at the G.P. Cancer Centre, who went out of their way to make sure Wendy was comfortable and well taken care of.
A Celebration of Memories for Wendy will be held at a later date.
