It is with great sadness that the family of Dennis Stewart announces his passing on August 9, 2023 at the age of 82.
He was only ill for a few months, so he enjoyed life to the fullest with his wonderful family and friends.
Dennis was born in Vancouver on April 2, 1941 to Pauline and Harry Stewart. He will be missed by his loving wife and soulmate Susan, daughter Katherine (Kyle), son Greg (Joanne) and sister Marilyn Shaw. He was proud ‘Papa’ to his granddaughter Olivia and step-granddaughter Aurora.
Dennis had a very loving and close relationship with his extended family; Barb and Jim Sced, and Gord McLennan and Grethe Thorburn. “Uncle D” will be loved and missed by his nieces and nephews; Colleen Gillespie, Michelle Gatrill, Aron, Tim, and Jim Sced, David, Matt and Mike McLennan.
In 1973, Dennis and Susan met on a blind date arranged by friends, and were married the following year. They were together for an amazing 50 years. He will be dearly missed.
Dennis was passionate about all life has to offer including skiing, sailing, golf, tennis, food, music, wine and travel, but most of all he cherished his beloved wife, kids, family and friends. He loved Jimmy Buffett’s music and eating his “cheeseburgers in paradise”.
Dennis followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, studying Pharmacy at UBC from 1960-1964. In 1965, he returned to UBC for a degree in Chemical Engineering. After graduating from UBC, he joined IBM as a Systems Engineer. During his 27 years with IBM, he worked in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax. He retired from IBM in 1996, and worked on contract with Royal Bank for a short time before joining Symcor until he retired in March 2011.
During his career, Dennis and family moved across the country with several work relocations. In 1989, they settled in Aurora for 28 years. Many good times were had with their wonderful friends and neighbours on Cranberry Lane.
In 2017, Dennis and Susan built their dream home in Thornbury. It was the perfect location for Dennis who was strong, fit and active every day. He enjoyed skiing on Blue Mountain, paddling on Georgian Bay and golfing with friends. He loved the High Bluff gatherings and sitting around the fire pit with the guys.
Dennis loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with Susan and the family. Fondly referred to as “our fearless leader” Dennis was known to research every detail before making a purchase or planning a trip. His dedication to excelling in all facets of life benefitted all those who knew him, as he generously imparted his wisdom with his loved ones.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date, with details to follow.
