Peacefully at Queen’s Garden Long Term Residence in Hamilton, where he was cared for with exceptional dignity and grace during his final days.
Ron leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Deborah Gray, daughter Leslie (John Skain), and sons Bradley (Lesley McLean) and Sean (Nicole Drimmie), along with seven amazing grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Allan (Sonia), sister Norma Linton, nephews Graham, Randall, and Fraser Linton and their wonderful families, along with mother-in-law Barbara Gray, and sister-in-law Carolyn Richards.
Ron was an unusual combination of artist and businessman, and so it was natural he went into advertising, starting his career at Famous Players. In 1955, he joined Cooper Weeks, where he helped build the iconic baseball and hockey brand, Cooper Canada. On his 25th anniversary at Cooper, Ron opened Carter Advertising Associates with the love of his life, wife Deb. Thanks to the generosity of Jack Cooper, their first and long-time client was Cooper Canada/Buxton leather goods. Other clients included Stelco, Domtar, the Westin Hotel, and Royal Insurance. After retirement, Ron kept busy driving a school bus in Oakville, which opened up a new world of friends and fun.
Throughout, Ron loved photography, skiing, hiking, travelling, fishing and especially boating on his beloved trawler, Brave Star. He was an accomplished artist, working in watercolour and oils. In his sixties, he took up gourmet cooking and even got his motorcycle license to keep up with his wife.
Ron was a long-time member of Knox Presbyterian Church Oakville and enjoyed Knox Waterdown in later years. An abiding faith in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ sustained Ron through life’s trials, giving him an optimistic, easy going nature.
His canine companions were dear to him. Golden Retrievers Barkley, Quentin and Bunny are on a joyful walk with him now.
Ron will be dearly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 12, from 1:00 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Antrim Glen. Please contact the family for more details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (www.dogguides.com).
