It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Jane Petersen on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024. She passed away at home peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by love. Jane leaves behind a legacy woven with love, creativity, and simple joys that coloured her days.
Jane was born on January 17th, 1940 to the late Pearl and John “Jack” Shaw in Burlington.
Jane is survived by her children Chris Wilson (Lynn) and Susie Hill. She will be missed by grandchildren Adam Wilson (Deb), Heather Wilson, Tierney Hill, Taylor Wilson (Taylor Webb), Mikaela Wilson (Mike Nasiadkas), Aris Bynoe and great-grandchildren Payton Hill, Amelia Newbold, Brooklyn Wilson, and Jaxon Wilson. She was predeceased by granddaughter Taryn Hill (2013) and son Brent Wilson (2021).
Of nine loving siblings, Jane will be fondly remembered by surviving sister Norma Bindon, and brothers Alan Shaw and Peter Shaw.
Born in Burlington, Jane moved to Thornbury in 1968 to raise her three children. Jane quickly became a respected and loved member of the Thornbury community, serving at the St George’s Anglican Church and singing in the church choir.
Jane’s passion for nurturing beauty blossomed early on. She cultivated her skills as a hairdresser, owning her own thriving business within the comforting walls of her home. Friends and family who came and went could often smell the lingering perm chemical while her grandchildren played in the salon after hours. With her warm spirit Jane not only styled hair but also formed lasting connections with her clients, becoming a cherished presence in their lives.
Upon embracing an early retirement, Jane embarked on a new chapter filled with the things she held dear and now had endless time for. Her creative spirit found solace in her gardens where she nurtured all plants, but specifically her cherished rose bushes. She also expressed herself through paint and canvas, favouring landscapes but especially portraits of her grandchildren. All while listening to classical music, melodies that became the soundtrack to cherished memories with friends and family.
Jane’s true masterpieces were the moments she shared with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. With boundless love and unwavering devotion, she poured her wisdom into their hearts leaving an indelible imprint forever.
Jane’s frugality was legendary. Her keen eye was always on the lookout for hidden treasures at yard sales or the local outreach centre, with grandchildren in tow. Yet, it was her generosity that truly defined her as she shared her laughter and wide smile with everyone who crossed her path. What little she had, her possessions always made it back to the outreach centre and her recycling routine was thorough.
In her later years, Jane found solace in the simple pleasures of her daily walks where she reveled in the beauty of nature, something that always brought her peace. Each step was a testament to her resilience, her spirit always unyielding even in the face of her life’s challenges and losses.
Her spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and boundless creativity – a legacy that will bloom, just like the gardens that she nurtured so tenderly. As we mourn her loss, let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Jane. Jane’s light will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service that will be held on Saturday, May 25th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at a family member’s private residence (137 Bruce Street South, Thornbury Ontario) for anyone wishing to attend.
