Obituary
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Paul Douglas Barr of Conception Bay South, NL, on Wednesday the 29th of March 2023. Paul passed away at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on April 15, 1934 in Caldwell Brook, NB, he was the son of the late Oley and Irene (Wright) Barr and was married to Dorothea (Marshall) Barr for 49 years, until her passing in 2007.
Paul spent 27 years in the Canadian Air Force being posted to various stations including Alert, NWT and Lahr, West Germany. He was also in Egypt and Cyprus briefly in the mid 1970’s and participated in Operation Morning Light to clean up radioactive debris from a Russian satellite which crashed in Canada’s artic in 1978. Upon retirement from the Canadian Forces, Paul purchased both the beehive and Seaview Lounges which he ran till the mid 1990’s often joking that he spent 15 years behind bars in Bay Bulls. He was a physically active man, skiing and bicycling well into his eighties and had a very full life right to the end.
Paul leaves to mourn with loving memories his good friend and companion Christine Cave; children Linda (Michel), James (Regina) and Glenn (Karina); grandchildren Paul (Stephanie), Taylor, Laura and Lydia; great-grandchildren Natalie and William; siblings, Gary Barr (Helena), Phillip Barr (Judy), Fred Barr (Susan); and various brothers and sisters-in-law including Donna Barr and Helene Drodge with whom he was particularly close; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Paul was predeceased by siblings, Eileen Gamblin, Linda Rowling, Sandra Bargamis, William Barr, Ronald Barr, June Giberson, Elizabeth Barr, Daryl Barr and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Paul will also be sorely missed by the crows, blue jays and other assorted song birds around Elliotts Place that enjoyed his peanuts, suet and bird feeder.
Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave., St. John’s on April 3, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to Dr. McDonald and the palliative care team as well as the doctors, nurses and staff of the Health Sciences Centre and the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre for their care and compassion. As an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory may be made to the Daffodil Place, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of ones choice.
