It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of
Noreen Deborah Spence, age 91, of Baie
Verte, NB. Noreen passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at
the Sackville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Amherst, NS, she was a daughter of the late
Vincent and Margaret (Doyle) Goodwin.
As a young woman Noreen traveled from Baie Verte New
Brunswick to Bellville Ontario for her training in nursing and
returned to the Sackville (NB) Hospital where she nursed for many
years. Noreen was instrumental in starting a diabetic clinic
in Sackville. She also was involved with the original
planning of the Westford Nursing Home in Port Elgin NB.
Noreen is remembered fondly by those who she worked with and those she
nursed.
Noreen was a painter and made beautiful watercolor
pieces depicting the Baie Verte scenery. Noreen loved to ski
on the Baie Verte marshes and through the woodland trails in
winter. She loved birds and every aspect of
nature. Noreen enjoyed trips out on the bay with her husband
and sons. A swimmer in the great river, Noreen could be
found down by the shore with her friends young and old until she was
in her 90s.
Noreen was very involved in her community and cared
for those around her. Noreen was a great story-teller and
avid historian. She loved to share memories about her
experiences growing up on her parent’s farm in Baie Verte
and helping in her father’s general store. She
could make characters and events come alive through words steeped in
nuance and humor.
Noreen was fiery, wise and tough as nails.
She was a faithful friend, a mother to many, and a pillar in family
and community.
Noreen will be dearly missed by her sons Marc (Ghita
Levin), and Michael (Mary Thompson), both of Baie Verte; siblings,
Margaret Ann, Dartmouth NS, Esther, Moncton NB, Don, Winnipeg MN, and
Reg, Wawa ON.
She was predeceased by her husband George, son Jeff,
and brother Rod.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
Jones Funeral Home, Port Elgin and
Sackville, NB, 364-1300, where cremation has taken
place. A gathering at her home (314
Main Street, Baie Verte, NB) will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023
from 1-4pm. Noreen will be
interred with her husband in the Baie Verte Cemetery at a later
date.
