It is with great sadness that we, the family of Marjorie Anne Hillier (nee Hogan), announce the sudden loss of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and cherished friend. Marjorie passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2024.
Marjorie was the daughter of the late Frank and Eliza (Sheppard) Hogan. Born March 11, 1954, in New Victoria (New Waterford Lake) Marj was one of 10 children. The baby of the family was also the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents Marjorie was predeceased by her siblings Lorraine, Fran (Al Veres), Sue, Lloyd ‘Muzzy’ (Theresa), Geraldine, Mary ‘Booie’ (Mattie Matthews), Clarence ‘Boisey’, Michael ‘Mikey’, and a brother Francis in infancy.
Growing up at The Lake was a celebration. All special events were enjoyed with a crowd of family and friends, but they didn’t need an occasion to gather. Year round the generations enjoyed time together sharing food and drink, playing cards, and telling stories. They skated on the lake in winter months and spent many late summer nights with neighbors by the bonfire.
As a child Marjorie spent a lot of time at the family home on Topshee Drive (Sydney). At the age of 12 following the death of her mother Marj moved in to be raised by her older sister, Ger. She graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1972 before studying briefly at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. In her younger years she worked at the Co-Op on Alexandra Street in Sydney. She was employed for 20 years with the Nova Scotia Power Corporation (Sydney office) where she created lifelong friendships with coworkers. She and the ladies continued to socialize long after it closed, and still keep in touch. Marj was also employed at Zellers before retiring, but her most rewarding job was being a mother. Her son already meant the world to her, and then he blessed her with title of Grandmother.
Retirement was well deserved and looked good on her. She settled into her new role of housewife and didn’t seem to mind her husband’s doting. ‘The mailman’ as she lovingly referred to him felt honoured to take care of her. Cooking, cleaning, and laundry were a few of the jobs she supervised while he enjoyed hearing her catch up with the girls on her laptop. Their small home already feels too big without her companionship.
The happiest memories were created during weekends spent with her grandchildren. From the time they were little they enjoyed sleepovers at Grandmas. Fueled on affection and cuddles, they spent many hours playing games and having nerf wars. She was always there for them and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on at their dance competitions and motor cross races in Loch Lomond, or to take them on an unforgettable Disney trip. Marj loved to travel! She enjoyed all-inclusive vacations down south, living it up in Las Vegas, a Toronto Blue Jays game while visiting family, or a relaxing getaway in Margaree, also occasionally Marjorie liked to try her luck at Casino Nova Scotia.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Bobby Aucoin, who has loved her for 30 years; and fur baby Tigger who completed their family 3 years ago. Also left to mourn her loss are Marjorie’s only son, John Hillier (Trisha Devoe) of Sydney; grand children Kyle Hutt, Taryn, and Leah Hillier; Bobby’s children Robert Aucoin, Denise (Brian) McLeod, Kimberly Hennessy, Eric Aucoin (and their families); brother-in-law John Pegg; and sisters-in-law Pauline Hogan and Donna Burke. She will be missed by treasured nieces and nephews in Ontario and Cape Breton; dear friends and special cousins she appreciated as they were more like sisters to her. Best ‘Bingo Buddy’ Sheila Locke McMaster will miss their regular Bingo nights at the New Waterford Army & Navy (an outing Marj looked forward to each week). Marjorie chose family as her friends, and she loved her friends like they were family. She will be missed tremendously by her childhood and lifelong friend Kay Stapleton. Ironically, these world travelers had just returned from a Caribbean cruise, celebrating their 70th birthdays together.
In Memory of Marjorie donations may be directed to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the EMS and CBRP for their compassion and care.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of McLellan Funeral Home, 3188 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford where a Visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 2nd from 1:00 p.m. up until the time of the service starting at 3:00 p.m. Father Godwin Obike officiating. Interment service will be held at a later date. Following the service all are invited to a reception at the Army, Navy & Air Force Unit 217 located on 495 Smith St. New Waterford. “Like the sun quenched its first dawning
The moon lost to the sea
Like the dew lost unto the morning
So you, my love, were lost to me
I can hear now the pipers calling
On that far distant shore
And my tears now like leaves are falling
And I will see your face no more
You are sleeping, you are sleeping
Oh, no sleep or peace can comfort me
I am weeping, oh, I am weeping
Till I will sleep in sleep with thee»
