Margaret Elizabeth (nee Young) Newman
April 9th, 1934 – May 7, 2024
On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Margaret passed peacefully away at her home in Kingsway Retirements Living at the age of 90 years, surrounded by the love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were her greatest pride and joy.
She was often affectionately referred to as Super Nan.
Margaret shared a beautiful life of 66 years with her loving husband Hugh Walter Newman. He has long awaited the moment to be reunited with his soulmate as they will now be forever together.
Her dream of becoming a journalist was eclipsed by her dedication to her family whom she considered her life’s work. She continued her passion by reciting and writing poetry. She was also renowned for her infectious jokes which brought laughter to all that knew her.
She is predeceased by her parents: Edward and Mary-Ellen (nee Phillips) Young siblings: Bernadette, Loretta, Helen, Ron, Harry, Jim, Jack and Albert.
In Laws Lucy Young (nee Newman), Joan Andrews (nee Newman), Walt Newman, Ted Newman and Gladys Adams.
Left with endless memories and hearts full of love her devoted children: Dean (Loretta), Ronnie (Cindy), Hugh (Pearl), Lucille (Steve) Shears and Teresita (Chris) Baldwin, precious grandchildren: Rhonda (Charlie), Dean, Amanda (Steve), Scott (Dana), Ashley (Tim), Hugh Jr. (Alanna), April (Brad), Stephanie (Andrew) Hawkins, Jennifer (Kyle) Petten, Mitchell Shears (Courtney), Mackenzie (Haley) and Natasha Baldwin, great grandchildren: Taylor (Becky), Tyler, Jack, Brandon Parsons, Sienna, Mason and Xavier Taylor, Lucia and Penelope Petten, Marley and Molly Hawkins, great-great grandchild Layton.
Her sisters: Patricia (Wayne) Crockett and Rosemary Caruana.
Her best friend and loving brother Ted (Mick) Young; Margaret and Hugh cherished your love and friendship. The stories shared and laughter brought to our family will always be remembered.
Sisters in law: Charlotte Jackson, Betty Young, Ruth and Viola Newman.
As well as many loving nieces, nephews, the Phillips’ families, extended relatives, and friends.
Our family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Staff of Kingsway Living Retirement for your compassion and care. We would like to send a special appreciation to Lynette, Jessica, Shianne, Ann Marie, Holly (Emily), Megan, Ashley, Emmanuel, Chef Robert, Gertrude, Yvonne, Joy, Jenn and Lindsay for the extra smiles and laughs you shared with mom, and for your friendship. You went above and beyond, for this we thank you. Margaret loved each of you.
Special mention goes out to her amazing Palliative Care Team.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mount Pearl on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 2:00 -9:00pm. Funeral service will be held at 9:30 am from St. Teresa’s Parish on Friday, May 10, 2024. For those unable to attend the service it will be live streamed. Please visit www.barretts.ca and follow the link provided. Interment to follow at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Cemetery St. Phillips – Portugal Cove.
