It is with heavy hearts and appreciation for a lifetime of love and memories that the family announce the peaceful passing of Maisie Hynes at the age of 98.
Maisie was born in Lark Harbour, Bay of Islands on November 21st, 1924, one of twelve children born to the late Charles and Mary Gilbert. Maisie moved to Corner Brook and married Horace “Ben” Hynes in 1944. She was a life-long resident of Humbermouth where she lived and raised six children. Maisie was an independent woman and after the loss of her husband in 1972, she worked as a matron with Correctional Services in Corner Brook for 13 years. Maisie was predeceased by her husband and her son, Edward.
Maisie is survived by her children: Barbara (Warwick), Judy (Carter), Ben (Catherine), Vera Lynn (George) and Joy (Patrick); her grandchildren – Sandy, Todd, Shelley, Benedict, Ben Jr., Drew, Aimee, George Jr. , Chelsea and Thomas; her great -grandchildren- Nicholas, Jonathan, Kaia, Brody, Chase, Adam, Riley and Parker. She is also survived by her twin sister and only surviving sibling, Jenny MacIntosh (Scarborough, Ontario).
Maisie will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. For Maisie, her children were everything. She worried about them, rooted for them, protected them, argued with them, forgave them and always kept on loving them. Maisie loved the outdoors and spent hours in her porch swing enjoying the sun, listening to the sounds of her neighbourhood in the shade of her bountiful cherry tree. She took delight in the small things, walking in the woods, berry- picking, sitting on a beach or watching a campfire. The grandchildren will carry their memories of picnics and hikes with Nan, always with the best of treats. Maisie was a generous person and her door was always open. Prior to her frailty and admission to long-term care, she faithfully prepared Sunday dinners and prided herself on feeding anyone and everyone who dropped by – there was always “lots to go around.”
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 8 from 12 Noon-1:00 p.m. at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. from Fillatre’s Funeral Chapel with The Very Rev. Catherine Short officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family of Maisie wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts during this time. A special thank you to staff of the 3South, Long Term Care, Corner Brook for their care and support.
