Obituary
Kenneth Cameron Laitila
1945-2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ken at the age of 78 on March 21, 2024 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
Ken was born on April 2, 1945 in the Eckville Hospital, to Erro and Sylvia Laitila, he was the youngest of three behind Walter and Raymond.
Ken was raised on the family farm 2 miles east of Eckville and attended school in Eckville from grades 1 through 12, playing baseball, football, and on the curling high school teams.
After graduating high school Ken took jobs driving school bus and running road grader all while keeping the family farm running. To help make ends meet he would take in horses to break.
He worked for Northern Geophysical on a seismic crew in northern Alberta, British Columbia and the North West Territories.
Once his family started to grow he came home to farm permanently, taking on outside jobs working at the Red Deer and Innisfail auction marts and driving truck hauling grain and cattle.
He mixed farmed but the cows were his main passion, he was very proud of the Hereford cow herd he built.
He embraced the cowboy way of life, always said “the only way to work cows was from the back of a horse.”
He broke his own horses to ride, some good some not so good. The ones special to his heart he called the “good ones.” Two of them being Prince and Lawrence.
Branding time was one of his favourite times of the year, gathering friends and neighbours to come and give a helping hand, as well as going and helping friends and family with their brandings in the spring. The best part of branding was sitting around the fire pit reflecting on the day having a glass of whiskey, or two, and telling stories till late in the evening or early morning.
In the fall he would be there in at the drop of the hat to help with driving cattle and horses home from pasture.
Ken also enjoyed fishing, camping, curling, reading books of western history, cowboy poetry, dancing and in the early years pack trips to the mountains.
Ken was active in the community by serving on local committees such as the Eckville Cemetery Board, Diamond Valley Gas Coop, and Benalto Elks.
Ken was a strong believer in supporting your local community. If he needed anything he would always check to make sure he could get it in town before having to go anywhere else.
Ken is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gail of 53 years; daughter Rachelle (Lee smith); son Daryl (Bobbi); and grandchildren Chase, Paige, and Kyle.
He will be missed by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family would like you to thank Eckville Homecare and all the special friends and neighbours for all their help and support.
A Celebration of Ken’s Life will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the Eckville Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken’s memory can be made to STARS Air Ambulance.
