With heavy hearts, the family of Joyce Anita May Dickie announce her passing with her son at her side at the age of 93 on February 19, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB.
Born on September 21, 1929 in Edmundston, NB to the late William H.A. Smith and Florence May (Allen) Smith, Joyce was predeceased by her eight siblings: Reginald, Guy, Fred, Clayton, Murray, Pearl, Jean and Shirley, her husband Kenneth (1972), partner Stan Watkins (2007), four of her grandchildren: Aaron, Blake, Melanie and Ted.
She is survived by her six children: Bruce (Carol), Susan (Mike), Peter (Gina), Anne (Bob), Ron (Judy), Tracy (Tracie), her 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Joyce worked in the nursing field for more than 20 years. Widowed in her forties, she continued to work night shifts to care of her children during the day, getting them up and ready for school, oftentimes only getting a few hours of rest after supper before the start of her next shift. Her determination and unwavering spirit saw her through the toughest of times.
Fiercely independent, she never gave up on anything she set her mind to, a trait that she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
She always spoke her mind and had a great sense of humor. She knit mittens and socks for her family and patiently instructed her family (over and over again) on how to knit them. She loved baking (she made the best cookies), doing puzzles, playing bingo, attending church services and spending time with her beloved family. She also loved cards. Sunday afternoons were spent playing 45’s with her parents and siblings and later in life, she continued the Sunday game day tradition every other week and more often when she could with her family.
She enjoyed travelling, especially to see her children and other family members and friends. She loved food – especially fish and chips and cheesecake. She also loved liver and onions – I struggle with that one!
During her final days, she was surrounded by her family visiting in person and over the phone. The dedicated doctors and nurses of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital provided her with the utmost care and attention. Their unwavering commitment to her was a source of comfort, and they will always be remembered with gratitude and respect.
A service will be held at a later date where we will say farewell to this amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will always remain in our hearts and memories. Her strength, courage and determination will continue to inspire us all.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Alzheimer’s society, a cause close to our hearts.
Arrangements are in the compassionate care of Chipman Funeral Home & Crematorium (506-339-6612). Memories and condolences may be shared through www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca.
