It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Joan Charbonneau (nee Tait) at the Deep River and District Hospital on Thursday, May 24, 2024 at the age of 95 years. Joan Charbonneau, of Deep River, and formerly the longest living resident of Stonecliffe, ON.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Allan in 1987. Cherished Mother of Ann Frketich (Gerry) of Pembroke, Pat (Marie) and Bernie of Deep River, Barry (predeceased 2021) (Debbie) of Mackey, Kevin (Nancy) of Arnprior, Doug (Kim) of Consecon, Dan (Brenda) of Dwight and Karen Lubbers (Vince) of Deep River. Treasured Granny to Rod (Christie), Darlene (Stevan), Jeff (Kelly), Derek, Darryl, Jason (Kathy), Jessica (Craig), Jared, Jordan, Jonah (Alana), Benjamin (Trish), Scott, Jennifer, Brandon, Nathaniel, Caitlin (Dan) and Travis (Jessica). Adoring Great-Granny to Brittany (Josh), Mackenzie (Charlotte), Emmalee, Matthew, Hailey, Miriah (predeceased 2006), Shannon, Nathaniel (Nate), Carson, Haley, Leigha, Wyatt, Luke, Ian, Logan, Heidy, Emily, Scotty Jr., Evan, Parker, Darwin, Evelyn, Jillian, Charlotte, Skye, Owen, Jacob, Wesley, Luke and Theodore.
She is predeceased by her parents Joseph Tait and Florence McKenna, and her siblings Lawrence, Gerald, Francis “Pete”, Erma “Peggy”, Irving and Patricia. Special sister to Rita Flintoff, Zita Valliquette, Alf Tait and Inez McQuirter. Joan is survived by several nieces, nephews, and god-children.
Joan spent her childhood growing up in the old village of Stonecliffe and moved to the current Stonecliffe after the Ottawa River was flooded, and only moved to Deep River when she turned 79. When Joan was 14, she went to Mattawa and worked in the Mica plant and had to have a letter allowing her to be on the streets after 2 am to walk home. She returned home, and due to her Father being the Fire Ranger and only family with a telephone, she volunteered to report enemy planes during WWII. She had to log information of all identifying marks of the planes and call the information in. She then worked at CFB base in Petawawa, ON until the war ended in 1945. She got married in 1947 and with her Mom’s early passing, she and her husband Allan and daughter Ann, moved in with her Father and she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters, until they were old enough to look after themselves. In 1952 she joined the CWL, and she received her 70 year pin last year. She was the local Postmaster of Stonecliffe until 1991 when the government moved all home based post offices to a local business. The people of Stonecliffe knew that if anyone was looking for information about the village, everyone was directed to Joan. She helped out at many various occasions, whether it was selling tickets at the Winter Carnivals, to making coleslaw and beans for the Church suppers, she always gave her time to anyone who asked. She was instrumental in organizing the Veterans memorial in 2007.
The family would like to say a special thanks to the Doctors and nurses at the Deep River and District Hospital for their care and compassion of Mom.
As per Joan’s request, visitation will be at the Valley Funeral Home, Deep River on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 7-9 pm. A private family viewing will be held on Friday May 31, 2024 from 10 – 10:45 am. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Deep River on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 11am, followed by Interment at Our Lady of the Snows Parish Cemetery, Stonecliffe, ON, A luncheon will follow at the Township Hall in Stonecliffe, ON. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Valley Funeral Home, Deep River.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to a charity of your choice in Mom’s memory would be appreciated by the family.
