Harbottle, Hazel Etta
The Harbottle Family share news of the peaceful passing of their precious Mom and Grami, Hazel Harbottle (Parkes) on March 29th, 2024.
Hazel was mom of four children, Dianne, Dale, Deborah, and Dean.
She was also Grami to nine and Great Grami to four: the late Jason, Garrett and his son Jaxsyn, Sarah and her son Benson, Keila Roesner (Ben) and their children Eileen and Elwood, Callie McCullough, Madelene, Hillary, Scott, and Grant Harbottle.
With family by her side, Hazel left this world to reunite with her beloved husband Elwood, tiny daughter Dianne, the late first grandchild Jason, and adored daughter-in-law Sharon in Heaven.
Born to Jack and Alice Parkes on July 18, 1934, and raised in Collingwood, Hazel is eldest sister to Gord (Pat) Bill, Kenny, Harvey (Terri) Donnie (Louise), Shirley (Fred) and Elenor. William and Laura Harbottle, Leslie (Muriel), Bruce Bell (Bernice), Reg Sheridan (Verna), Lorne Armstrong (Marie), and Fred Lekx (Donna) welcomed her into the Harbottle family. She was a much -loved aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was an independent businesswoman operating her own hair-dressing shop, Hazel’s Beauty Salon, in Thornbury, where she shared many years and memories with the community, often working late nights and early mornings to squeeze in any last-minute appointments, never turning anyone away.
Personable and cheerful, Hazel welcomed everyone she met with a smile, and was a trusted confidante, always encouraging, supportive and wise. Loving wife to Elwood Harbottle, she often shared the story of the day he taught her how to drive when she crashed his new car into a tree; he calmy talking her through it and she knew he was “the one.” They were happily married for nearly 60 years until his passing in 2013. Elwood would always say, “There’s no one in the world like wee-Hazey.” Her loving attentive care amid his final years of failing health was a shining example of true love and devotion. Together they proudly owned and operated Hazelwood Orchards for many years growing some of Beaver Valley’s finest apples. Among their many other successful business pursuits was the Trillium Restaurant. Together Hazel and Elwood were unstoppable and an adventurous team: from the hairdressing shop to the farms, the restaurant, multiple real estate flips, to running a lodge up north on Shawanaga Lake. They loved to travel, enjoying and appreciating the foods, music and people of different cultures, always happy to return home with tales to tell. They left a legacy of hard work, independent thinking, integrity, give-you-the-shirt-off-their-back and “come in for dinner” is what they stood for.
Without question Hazel’s greatest pride and joy was her family, she was always playful, loving, attentive and generous. Barely 5’ tall, she had a stubborn and strong streak, “like an ox”, she knew her mind and wouldn’t budge on her convictions under that unruffled exterior. Immensely proud of her children and grandkids, and their accomplishments she made every family get-together an epic event full of love, joy and of course so much food.
With Hazel firmly behind the wheel and Elwood with the map, Mom and Dad drove countless hours and miles often bone-tired to support, encourage and believe in their young kids’ musical dreams. For many years they’d drive across Canada to arrive unannounced at musical events having sensed “the kids are homesick” while on tour. Apples, homemade treats, gifts from home, and dinners out for the whole band were always a welcome relief. On one such trip, they retrieved a big ol’ Tom cat (Freddy the free loader) better suited to farm life than touring with the band. Grami never missed a grandkids graduation, piano recital, rodeo, school pick-up, or a last-minute meet-up for lunch. Her door was always open to friends, neighbors, family or strangers, as well as pets and stray animals – she was going feed you whether you were hungry or not! Busy baking pie, throwing on a roast, whipping up a pot of chicken soup, or flipping pancakes- no one ever went hungry when Hazel was around! Her retirement was contently spent at Eugenia Lake (though she never retired from cooking up a storm). Hazel loved to swim, race the boat and wave runners, and lay in the sun reading a trashy romance novel; a fish fry was always in order followed by a well-timed skinny dip. Her last ten months were spent in Errinrung Long Term Care, adored by the staff for her sweet nature, gracious appreciation and sense of humour. The Harbottle family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Errinrung staff for the incredible care, compassion and kindness shown to Hazel and our family as well as thank Dr. Tim Remillard for his many years of care and quick response when in need.
A private family memorial service will be held with a celebration of life is to follow at a later date. We will miss our Mom and Grami greatly, but there is peace knowing it was her time, she lived life to the fullest, loved and was loved deeply. There’s comfort in knowing she is reunited with those she missed so dearly and has earned her rest in peace.
