Fred passed away peacefully in Kamloops on Sunday, May 26, after a life well lived.
Fred was born on August 7, 1926, in Reedley, California. Eldest son of Peter and Millie, he
grew up on their vineyard. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy in July
1944. In January 1945, he set sail on the newly commissioned USS Brookings, a navy
transport and supply ship. Sailing initially to Hawaii and then on to many islands in the
South Pacific and Indonesia, and finally on to Japan and China. They returned home in 1946
transporting troops from the Pacific regions.
Fred married his “bride,” Virginia, in September 1951. Fred D., Roger, and Lark were born
over the next few years. In 1964, the family immigrated to Canada looking for new
opportunities. They undertook farming ventures in 100 Mile House, Mcleese Lake,
Armstrong and Ashcroft areas over the years. Fred spent most of his life involved with
agriculture. Whether in the vineyard, raising crops, milking cows, or operating a
greenhouse, he did it all, sharing his knowledge with his children, grandchildren, and
friends along the way. He also worked as a cement mason on many large construction
projects to support the family. He volunteered as a leader in Air Cadets, 4-H, Future
Farmers of America and was a member of the Toastmasters Club for 25 years. When he
was in his early 50’s he went to Toronto to train as a massage therapist. He obtained his
RMT and ran his own practice for over 20 years following. During that time he
volunteered his services at the Commonwealth and Canada Games.
In his senior years, Fred would be busy with his garden all summer, nurturing plants, and fruit
trees and building beautiful rock walls and pathways. In the winters, he was at his easel
every day painting. His paintings were all connected to his life experience on the land,
each one numbered and with its story.
Fred was predeceased by their father Pete, mother, Millie, brother, Richard and son, Fred D. He is
lovingly remembered by his bride Virginia, sister Florence, son Roger (Sandra), daughter
Lark (Rejean) six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great
grandchildren.
Special thanks to Fred’s caregivers at Pinegrove and Kamloops Seniors Village, who made
his life comfortable for the past two years.
