Eugene John Barabash Obituary
Eugene Barabash passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 26, after a challenging two years of living with cancer.
Gene lived an incredibly full and active life, and is remembered as a warm, kind and generous soul who had boundless energy and passion for his loved ones.
He will be lovingly remembered and intensely missed by his wife of over 60 years, Margaret, his son, James (Lucia Chen) and daughter, Christina (Saman Musacchio) and grandchildren, Talia and Avery Barabash, and Gabriel Musacchio. He is also survived by his brother, Lloyd Barabash (Linn) and many nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by his parents, William and Jean, and his sister, Helen Wintonyk.
Gene was born July 6, 1937, in Roblin, Manitoba and moved to Edmonton in 1955. He received a BSc in Pharmacy at the University of Alberta. It was also at the U of A that he met the love of his life, Margaret, as they both pursued their degrees. The career of pharmacist suited him perfectly, combining his incredibly vivid memory with his love for engaging with people. His most satisfying professional years were 1989-2006, while operating Maurice Pharmacy in the McKernan neighbourhood, where the community trusted him and treated him like family. His customers appreciated his personal approach, and several found comfort in his ability to communicate with them in Ukrainian.
Across his life span, Gene enjoyed many interests, including getting out in nature, whether hiking, skiing, skating, golfing, or canoeing; cooking dishes such as cabbage rolls and borsch; indulging an avid interest in history and politics; and traveling abroad, as well as taking many memorable family trips to the Rocky Mountains and BC. One of his simple joys in life was tinkering with various DIY projects that he approached with his engineering knowledge and creativity.
His retirement years were also defined by a passion for walking in Edmonton’s river valley; voracious reading; the mix of joy and disappointment as a loyal Oilers fan, cheering for the team through thick and thin.
His greatest pride and joy, though, came from being with his family and watching them grow, learn, and thrive. Retirement enabled him to spend quality time with his three grandchildren, whom he adored.
Gene was special to those who had the pleasure of knowing him and was fortunate to live a life filled with love, laughter, and deep personal connections.
In honouring Gene’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held in the fall. To honour Gene’s memory, please consider donating to The Mustard Seed.
