Dorothy Thomson, daughter of the late David and Clara Thomson of Manitoulin Island, passed away quietly January 2nd, 2024 at the age of 85.
Dorothy was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all her godchildren and their families, her beloved cousins and extended family, her church community, her nursing colleagues, her friends and classmates and their children.
A graduate of Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Dorothy worked many years in Public Health in Toronto, Norfolk County and Sudbury. She was dedicated to assisting vulnerable street youth and those suffering with addiction, mental health issues as well as suicide-bereaved families. An excellent listener when listening was needed most, Dorothy provided a kind and guiding hand helping others work towards brighter futures. Considered wise by many, she was good to children, whom she called “little people”, as well as youths often noting that “teenagers were here favourite people”. Dorothy was an active member of the community – a member for The Sudbury Action for Youth (SACY), The Outreach Centre, The Downtown Churches Group, The Women’s Bible Study Group and a leader of The Suicide Support Group. A proud Christian, Dorothy was a longtime member of the Church of Epiphany of Sudbury.
Until the last few years, Dorothy was an extensive traveller, avid reader of mystery novels, knitter, history buff and active volunteer. A testament to her strength was her ability to adapt with her loss of vision. We would like to thank all the friends and health care professionals who have assisted Dorothy over the last few years with a special thank you to the caring staff at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre of Sudbury these last few months.
A funeral is being held at The Church of the Epiphany on January 20, 2024, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to either The Church of the Epiphany or The Sudbury Action for Youth would be appreciated.
