Sadly, Bill passed away on October 13, 2022 at the age of 84.
He will be missed by his children: Gerry & Rita, Sandra & Allen, and Janice & Graeme; and by grandchildren: Kate, Laura & Alex, Steve & Jessica, and Cole; Sister, Lenie Roks and in-laws Eugene & Carolyn Harasymec, Linda Duynisveld, and Joe Swinkels. He was ”Uncle Bill!!!” to many nieces and nephews and honorary uncle/grandpa to many of our friends.
Predeceased by his wife & partner in all things for 56 years, Elsie; parents, Leendert and Catharina Duynisveld, in-laws Steve and Nellie Harasymec; siblings and in-laws Paul & Truus Duynisveld, Corry & John Vander Loo, Gerry & Corrie Duynisveld, Case & Bernice Duynisveld, John Roks, Bill & Cathy Flegel, Len Duynisveld and Margaret Swinkels.
Bill was born in Hazerswoude, The Netherlands, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1951, settling in southern Ontario. He went to school in Komoka and London, ON. A transfer with Silverwood Dairies brought him to Winnipeg in 1960. He shifted to Manitoba Pool for a few years, but the majority of his work career was with Royal Stewart Gymnasium Equipment. He retired in 2000 which created more time for helping family, travelling with Elsie, gardening, and spoiling grandchildren.
Elsie and Bill met at St. Mary’s Cathedral C.Y.O. in 1961 and were married on July 13, 1963. They made their home in Transcona, where they enjoyed being together… playing cards, or taking a turn around the kitchen when a good polka or waltz came on the radio. Family gatherings were always important, whether it was just us kids or the 25+ people on Christmas Eve or Easter morning – Dad was happiest seeing everyone together. Blessed Sacrament Parish was a second home where he developed many lasting friendships while being on numerous committees and helping out where ever and when ever needed. He was an outstanding caregiver for Mom in her last years. Dad moved into St Michael’s Villa after Mom passed and enjoyed the community of people there.
Bill was a “get ‘er done” kind of guy. He could not resist the challenge of building or repairing something that anyone needed or he thought could still be used. He took pride in a job well done and was always willing to help, whatever the task was. He enjoyed being with people and had many friends whom he joined in walking, cycling, playing cards, skiing, wood working, bowling and dancing.
We are thankful/grateful for the circle of friends Dad had since Mom passed: his best bud, Ron; the morning walking crew, the Sunday after church brunch bunch, Monday night crib group, the St. Michael’s Villa residents. A special thank you to Helen for being his friend and dance partner these last few months.
Thank you also to the first responders, paramedics, and St. Boniface Emergency Department.
Funeral service was at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 10 am, Friday, Oct. 21 with interment to follow at a later date. Honorary pallbearers were Kate, Laura, Alex, Steve, Jessica & Cole. Livestream available at www.seasonsfunerals.ca .
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Blessed Sacrament Parish Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
