Shirley Marie Jones
June 15, 1934 – October 16, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, sister and grandmother. Shirley Marie Jones passed away on October 16, 2022, at the age of 88 with loving family members by her side. Born in Upper Hammonds Plains on June 15, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Isabel Jones.
Shirley retired from CFB Stacadona hospital after 24 years of service. She was extremely active in the church and community. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and served as a past president and member of the Ladies Aux. for over 50 years, Usher,
member of Social Committee, Cheer committee, Church Choir, Custodian and Trustee Board. She also served as Assistant Envelope Steward and Treasurer for the Voices of Praise Choir. She was also very active in the community where she was President of various groups including the UHP
Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, also served as Treasurer; the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Development Association, serving as its first female President and Seniors of UHP Club. She also served as board member of the Lucasville/UHP Development Association; UHP Education Committee; Education Committee for Black Learners; UHP Water Project. She received the NS Provincial award for “Volunteerism” from the Premier of NS Stephen MacNeil in 2015. She truly personifies the word “Volunteer” because whenever there was an event, whether church or community, Shirley was there, usually the first one to arrive. Not only did she have a heart to serve but a heart to give. Her children follow in her footsteps working side by side with Mom at many functions within the community. She was also the recipient of Queen Elizabeth the II, Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding volunteer service to the community in 2002 and a certificate from the Upper Hammonds Plains Education Committee.
Shirley loved to travel and shop and was given the nickname “Shopping Shirley” by many of her friends. She is very hospitable and always opened her home and heart to many visitors. Every Sunday her driveway was full of cars as her family gathered there for weekly Sunday dinner.

She is survived by her sons, Philip (Monica), Reed (Kim), Walter (Lilena), Christopher (Selena) and Wrenfred. Daughters, Sherlene (Myles), Lila, Deborah and Gina.
