GREENBERG, Ruth (nee Bernstein) –
It is with very heavy hearts that the family of Ruth Greenberg shares the news her passing, on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the age of eighty- seven. Predeceased by her beloved husband of more than 61 years, Arthur. Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Debbie; Danny and Caryl; and Paul and Marla. Adoring Bubby of Mira; Josh, Kira and Rachel; and Talia, Morris and Micah. She will be missed by brother and sister- in-law, Jerry and Katy Bernstein, and their family, Jennifer and Yitz Gitelman, David, Yakira and Benjamin; Kevin Hickman; and Patrick Hickman and Isabella.
Born and raised in Montreal, Ruth was the daughter of the late Yetta and David Bernstein. She and Arthur met at McGill University in 1952 and were almost inseparable from then until his passing almost 4 years ago. When they married in September 1956, Ruth gained not only a husband, but ‘adoptive’ parents as well; she spoke with great fondness about how good the late Polly and Morris Greenberg were to her, and how they loved and treated her like the daughter they never had.
Ruth was quiet by nature, but that masked formidable strength and determination. She was an original ‘supermom’. She completed her degree taking courses at night, while raising three children, being volunteered for every class trip, homemaking, working full time alongside Arthur in his accounting practice, being active in synagogue activities, and travelling the world with Arthur. Later, she delighted in spending as much time as possible with her seven grandchildren, of whom she always spoke very proudly.
Ruth’s most recent years were spent in Toronto, living in a caring community. Though Alzheimer’s gradually took hold of her memory, she did not lose her ability to reason, speak, or find satisfaction in the moment, and her resolve and sense of independence remained with her. It was a gift that until the end, she knew and spoke with great love about her children and grandchildren; her final, whispered words were, «I love you, too.» The family gives special thanks to the staff of 147 Elder for their very dedicated, respectful, and compassionate care.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean- Talon West, on Wednesday, May 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Burial at Hebrew Sick Benefit Association Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva will be observed in Montreal on Wednesday immediately following the funeral and on Wednesday evening, 6:30 – 8:30 pm (check back on this webpage for update on location) and will continue at the respective children’s homes.
