1953-2022
Rodney Curtis Bent
passed gently and peacefully on October 28, 2022 in the home that he
built in Kingsport, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his loving family. His
beloved wife of 39 years, Charlene, his son, Ethan, and his daughter,
Mariel, by his side.
Born on September 20,
1953 in Middleton, he was the youngest of three sons to Dot and Laurie
Bent. He was raised primarily in Yarmouth and Wolfville. An avid music
lover from a young age, Rodney joined his first band, Langley Beach
Crowd, at just 13 years old. Inspired from his attendance at the 1969
Woodstock Music Festival, he would go on to have a 54-year musical
career as a masterful bass guitarist, with a memorable legacy in Nova
Scotia and multiple tours of Atlantic Canada as a full-time
musician.
His early working life
in petroleum extraction took him to locations such as Sable Island and
Northwest Territories, where he met Charlene, until he settled where
he started, in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. He worked as a
carpenter with Birdseye Builders and then closed out his working
career with 22 years at Acadia University as a respected member of the
Physical Plant HVAC staff.
Known by all for his
outgoing and enthusiastic manner, Rodney would quickly, and
frequently, strike up conversations with strangers, sometimes creating
lifelong friendships. With an inquisitive mind and knowledge on a vast
array of subjects, Rodney could always be counted on to lend a hand
with any task big or small.
He is survived by his
lifelong companion and wife, Charlene MacLellan; their children, Ethan
Bent (Danyelle) of East Moline, IL and Mariel McGuire (Kevin) of
Kingston, NS; grandchildren, Delaney and Killian McGuire; also a son,
Silas Lonas of East Setauket, NY; his oldest brother, John (Winnie)
Bent of Canso, NS; his sister-in-law, Anna-Maria Bent of Prospect, NS;
his cherished extended family of in-laws, nieces, and nephews; as well
as an abundance of friends made along the way.
He is predeceased in
his immediate family by his parents Dorothy (Cook), Laurie Bent, and
his middle brother, Brian.
A memorial service
will be held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville at 3:30 p.m.
on Saturday, November 5, 2022. Followed by a celebration of life
upstairs at Paddy’s, Kentville from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Internment will take place a later date in the Immaculate Conception
Church Cemetery, Wellington, PEI.
Rodney’s
family wish to express a heartfelt thank you for their compassionate
care to VON Home Services and Palliative Care, Dr. Colin Burgoyne and
Sanja, Dr. David Mulhall, and especially to his dear friend and
caregiver, Neva Hearn. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the
White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
