Obituary
James Richard Harriott (Rick) passed away on October 18, 2021 at the age of 74 surrounded by his loving family due to complications from COVID-19 in the Red Deer Hospital. Born in Innisfail, Alberta on April 5th, 1947, he was the youngest child of Edward and Agnes Harriott. He attended and graduated from Caroline School and went to work directly on the rigs thereafter. Rick married Lynne Leckie in 1967 and they lived in Caroline, Alberta. Their first child Corey was born on July 13, 1969 in Innisfail, and shortly after they moved to Whitecourt where in 1972, they were blessed with a daughter, Melissa Deanne on May 9th.
In 1974 Rick and Lynne moved their family back to Caroline, and purchased in partnership, the Caroline Supplies store and the North Hill Store in Red Deer with his brother-in-law and family. They bought a farm near Evergreen where they farmed and Rick continued to work in the oil industry. Rick loved being active and enjoyed coaching and playing fastball, curling and hockey. Rick tragically lost his wife Lynne on October 23rd, 1987.
In 1992, Rick and Pauline were married and he took on the father role for her 4 girls, Michelle, Theresa, Paula and Angela making the family a circle of 8. Rick continued to work in the oilfield and became a contract operator with Petro Canada under his own company, R. Harriott Oilfield Contracting Ltd. and remained active in the community as well as all his children’s activities and events. Rick and Pauline sold the farm in 1997 and moved to an acreage next to the Medicine River.
Rick retired at the age of 69 and continued to work hard on the acreage keeping himself busier than ever doing his woodwork, gardening and yardwork. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, they were his life. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, quadding and hanging out with his buddies in Eckville playing pool, curling and socializing.
In 2020 they sold the acreage and moved into Sylvan Lake, where he quickly met everyone on his street. Rick loved riding his bike and going for walks with his dog Mandy and talking to anyone that happened to be out that day. Rick loved to chat with everyone and had time to listen to anyone who needed an ear or a shoulder.
Rick is survived by his loving wife Pauline and their children Michelle Robson (Scott), Corey Harriott (Robyn), Melissa Harriott (Curt), Theresa Kauppi (Garth), Paula Firth (Ryan), Angela Harriott and Sister, Ardy Olgilvie. Grandchildren: Braidon, Noah, Camryn, Owen, Tori, Lynsey, Kianna, Addison, Gavin and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ed and Agnes, wife Lynne, brothers, Howard and Gerald, Sister Edna, and Granddaughter Jill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Lung Association or Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Red Deer Hospital ICU for their compassion and care.
