Rachelle’s Obituary
Wood, Rachelle Therese – Age 80 of South Greenwood, Kings Co., passed away on August 22, 2022, at the age of 80 in the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Rachelle was born in Hull, Quebec, to the late Oscar Labonte and Andree Bourgeois. Rachelle joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960, where she met her loving husband, Eric Wood. They married in 1963 in St. Sylvestre, Quebec, where she then left the RCAF at a rank of Leading Air Woman. Rachelle and Eric then started their family and embarked on a long, happy marriage that took them to postings across Canada and the United States. Rachelle was an avid volunteer starting with the former Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded. She was a coach for Kings County Special Olympics for over 15 years and could be found on track and field venues across Nova Scotia. Rachelle’s special project was the Friendly Neighbour’s Society which was founded in 1968 and registered as a charity in 1974. Rachelle joined the Society in 1992 and remained as secretary and an integral organizer until her passing. Rachelle and Eric spent countless hours making phone calls, reviewing applications, purchasing toys, food, and toiletries, and packing the thousands of Christmas hampers that were delivered over the years that she was part of this worthwhile cause. Rachelle was also Mrs. Santa Claus for several years at the major fundraising event for Friendly Neighbours – The Christmas Mommies and Daddies telethon. Rachelle’s favourite place was in the kitchen cooking for family and friends. Her standard attire included an apron and from the moment she woke up in the morning, an apron was around her waist. The kitchen was her domain, and we were all often at the end of her stern warning: “get out of my kitchen!” She especially loved hosting holiday meals and these meals included more than just family. Those who might be alone for the holidays were often invited to share the table with her and her family, from single military men who had to work over the holidays, empty nesters whose family couldn’t make it and even exchange students from Australia. The more people around her table, the happier she was. Rachelle had a special bond with her siblings, and while distance meant they would often get together only once a year or so, when they were together, they would often be laughing until long into the night – even they weren’t allowed in her kitchen, although they always tried. Rachelle is survived by her loving husband, Eric Wood; sons, Michael (Anne), Kingston, Dennis, South Greenwood, Danny, South Greenwood; daughters, Christine Beck, Torbrook, Tracy (Graham) Walsh, South Greenwood; brother, Carole Labonte, Senneterre, Que.; sisters, Nicole Labonte, Rouyn-Noranda, Celine Labonte, Rouyn-Noranda, Suzanne Labonte, Val d’Or; grandchildren, Jamie Jesseau, Ryan Walsh & Danielle Wood. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday August 27, 2022, in Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St., toll free: 1-855-825-3448. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2022, at Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church, 2 Church Street, Greenwood. Padre Elizabeth Shanahan officiating. Burial will take place in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Kingston.
