Nathan Jacobson Leather “Miinoiyii” (Berryeater) “Kahoapii” (Never Sits)
June 2, 1983 Three Hills, AB – December 25, 2022 Strathmore, AB
It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of our dear Nathan Jacobson Leather “Miinoyii” on December 25, 2022 in Strathmore, AB at the age of 39.
Nathan leaves behind his best friend of 26 years, Amanda Duck Chief. His children LaNaya, Leyton, Lexon, and Lacey Leather, Annie, and Jodyci. Nathan and Amanda also raised their Nephews Jayden (Dakota) Leather, Chase (Honey) Sun Walk and Chance (Ivyann) Leather as their own. Traditionally adopted children Laven Good Eagle and Joe Running Rabbit, God Children: Kage Yellow Fly, Tia Crow Chief, Blazen Many Guns.
Nathan is survived by his father Larry (Laverna) Leather, he loved his dad dearly. Brother Warren Winnipeg, sister Thomalina “Girlie” Leather (Rick) and Clarence “Jr” Leather. Special nieces Durell Holloway and Summer Sun Walk. Special uncles Wayne Leather and Clarence “Manee” Leather Sr. and traditionally adopted parents Dogie and Lisa Big Snake.
Nathan was predeceased by his mother Sarah Leather “Sikitsowaaki”, Brother William Jr. Winnipeg, George “Chico” Crow Chief, Aunties Lilly Edwards, Angelina Leather, Annie Running Rabbit, Beverly Leather, his best friends Tom Many Guns, Cassidy Saddle Back and Micheal Running Rabbit.
Although Nathan experienced loss, his love for his children, family and friends was unconditional, very overprotective with such a gentle soul. He had a great sense of humor and was immensely proud of all his nieces, nephews and children’s accomplishments, his passion for powwow and hockey will continue to shine through his children.
Nathan was passionate about sports. He played hockey, baseball and golf. He excelled in hockey. Playing with Siksika minor Hockey, won the pee-wee zone 6 championship and league, played for Cypress Timber Wolves AAA, Brandon, Manitoba, Fargo North Dakota summer hockey and back to Siksika winning a gold medal in his midget years in 2001. Played hockey with Siksika Buffalos and Siksika Minors. After Nathan’s hockey playing days his passion turned into coaching where he brought his team to win and bring home many championship banners with the Atoms, the Bantoms “2017”, the Junior novice “2019” at the Native provincials.
Nathan coached a lot of these young players from the time they were Atoms to their Midget years. Not only was he a coach, he was also a mentor to players on and off the ice encouraging them to always try hard and never give up. Nathan was awarded the 1st “Coach of the Year” award in Siksika in “2017”. Hockey was truly his Legacy. He was an avid Flames Fan.
Nathan was a member of the “Prairie Chicken Society”. He also made his cursillo in “2008” theme song “Casting Stone” and has worked several since as he really enjoyed his experience.
He will be missed by many nieces and nephews who adored him, friends who can tell you their stories, teammates and colleagues. Nathan leaves behind the following extended families Jerry Sitting Eagle, McMaster, Edwards, Wolfchild, Sleigh, Running Rabbit, Solway, Running Bird, Red Old Man.
Wake service to be held at the Gordan Memorial Arbour Monday, January 2nd, 2023 from 6 pm – 12 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Siksika Nation on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at 12 pm. Burial at the Washington Gravesite. Feast to follow.
