Obituary
It is with great sadness that we share the news of Mary Panchy’s passing at 101 years of age. She went peacefully in her sleep at Kelowna Hospice House on August 30, 2022.
She is survived by her two sons Noel (Merilee) Panchy of Victoria, BC and Eric (Jyleece) Panchy in Westbank, BC. and her sister Joy (Gerry) Derhak of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mary’s husband, Walter, predeceased her in 1996 along with her younger sister, Elsie Maltais in 2021.
Mary was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In her youth she learned to play mandolin and toured with an orchestra to play at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She and Walter met and were married in 1945 in Winnipeg where they lived and raised their two boys.
During her working years, Mary was employed as a bookkeeper at Royal Insurance, Manitoba Bridge and Iron in Winnipeg and Office Overload in Calgary, Alberta. Upon retirement, Mary and Walter moved to Victoria, BC and over the years enjoyed travelling to their favourite holiday spot in Hawaii. Mary loved exploring all the shops in Honolulu and always found special treasures to bring home for family and friends.
After Walter passed in 1996, she moved to Calgary to be closer to her sons. Spending 13 years at Legacy Estates enriched her life with many dear friends whom she chummed with throughout her stay there. In 2018, at age 97, Mary moved yet again to be near her son and daughter-in-law in West Kelowna, BC. She chose a lovely suite at Westwood Retirement Resort and quickly developed friendships. Her daily dinner companion, Marg, was a constant source of joy for Mary for the four years she enjoyed life there.
Mary lived a healthy and full life. She was a person who made friends easily, was very likeable, good natured and quick to smile and laugh. She loved her family and cherished her friends. We will miss her dearly. At Mary’s request, there will no Service.
