Joan Marion Foy – age 91, January 18, 1931 – September 17, 2022
Joan Foy (nee Pigott) died peacefully of heart failure on September 17, 2022 at Mount Sinai Hospital surrounded by her loving husband and sons. Joan was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. She was the daughter of Roy and Evelyn Pigott and sister to Mary Marshall, John, Michael, Father Peter, and Ellen Lott.
After graduating from Loretto Academy in Hamilton, Joan worked at the Connaught Medical Research Center in Toronto with a team of lab technicians assisting Dr. Jonas Salk in the discovery of the polio vaccine.
A blind date with a dashing squash player named John Foy in 1954 led to a glorious wedding in 1957, four sons, six grandchildren, and 65 years of happy marriage. Joan devoted her life to her husband and her four wonderful boys. The legacy of her endless love and care can be seen in the lives of all of those she has left behind.
With a joyful smile and an effervescent laugh, Joan lit up any room she entered. She loved to entertain her family and many friends at her always beautiful and always perfectly kept home. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. A true lover of games, be it Sudoku or cribbage, Joan had a deep passion for bridge, playing it competitively at the Monday Club and during her winters in Sarasota, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, John Edward Foy. Loving mother to John Victor, Peter Francis (Quinn Brodie), David Edward (Helen), and Timothy William (Chloe Plaunt), and loving grandmother to Julia, Matthew, Honor, Grayson, Cate, and Phoebe.
Donations in her memory may be made to Covenant House or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home at 159 Eglinton Ave West in Toronto on Friday, September 23rd from 2-4 pm. A private service will be held at a later date.
