Obituary
Jim Steadman passed away in Lethbridge with family by his side on Tuesday, Sept 13, 2022 at the age of 77 years.
Jim was the loving father of Cathy (Bruce) Cousins of Victoria BC and Kelly (Coreen) Steadman of Lethbridge AB. He is ‘Grandpa Jim’ to Sabrina, Neil and Robin Cousins, and ‘Papa’ to Avery and Lyle Steadman. Jim is survived by cousins, niece, nephews, his sister Shirley and close nephew Glen Schiltroth. He was predeceased by his mother Winnie, father Bill and sister Anne.
He was born in Dauphin, MB and his family moved to Flin Flon at a young age. He grew up, an outdoorsman, hunting and fishing. He was a problem solver and could get out of any bind. His passion for projects and tinkering started young. A family favourite story involved him modifying one of his first bicycles with his mother’s vacuum cleaner pipes, having fixed them to the bike to look like motorcycle tail pipes. In his projects, he often put the cus’ into custom.
Jim moved from Flin Flon MB in his early 20’s and began a lifetime career as a professional truck driver. He worked in the industry long enough to joke that he was one of the first ice-road truckers. He retired with over 30 years of service at just his most recent job, having driven more than 4 million miles’ accident free. His sense of adventure included off-road 4-wheel driving, snowmobiling, Harley’s and seeing what was over the next hill or around the next corner.
He was a master in the art of BS. A trip to the store could take an hour or more, as he was a man who loved to visit with people, whether he knew them or not. If you added coffee into the mix, there went the morning and a good part of the afternoon. Those who knew him well will understand the phrase “Good to the last drop!”
Jim was a kind, thoughtful, generous man who was quick to lend a hand. He was a great storyteller, with a quick wit and sense of humour, the laughter will be dearly missed.
Jim’s family would like to thank everyone in 3C at Chinook Regional Hospital and the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at St Michaels.
Those wishing to honour Jim are encouraged to take a friend out for coffee to share stories and a laugh; take that fishing trip you have been putting off; go on an adventure.
At Jim’s request no funeral service will be held. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
