Frederick Montague Mason
April 27, 1940 – December 29, 2022
Passed peacefully away on Thursday ,December 29, 2022 in the presence of loved ones, Frederick Montague Mason, 82 years old. Predeceased by his parents, Isabelle and Bill, and brothers Howard and Bill. Leaving to celebrate his life are his wife Jean (nee Clarke), daughter Carolyn Walsh (Barry), daughter Debbie Dyer (Craig), son Fred Mason (Linda Power), and his grandchildren: Anna, Clare, & Daniel Walsh; Emily, Laura, & Colin Dyer; Sophia & Genevieve Mason. Also left with fond memories are extended family members Bev & Eddie Bruce & Kevin McDonald, sisters-in-law Agnes Dickson, Sheila St. George (Gerry), Lena Collins, Violet Rideout, brother-in-law Len Clarke (Brenda), special niece Lynn Mason Houle (Mike), great-niece Sarah Houle-Clark, and many other relatives and friends. Fred was born in Montreal in 1940, and came to St. John’s with his Newfoundland-born wife and their 3 children in 1975. He worked in Security (now Campus Enforcement & Patrol) at Memorial University for over 25 years until his retirement in 2000. His true calling, however, was as “Pop”, as he helped “Nanny Jean” care for the grandkids living near them (often all of them at once!) throughout their pre-school and school years. He will be remembered by all for his good nature and his laugh. Special thanks to the ER staff at St. Clare’s, and the ICU staff at the HSC (especially nurse Amy) for their professionalism and conscientiousness during Fred’s last two days with us. Visitation will be at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, St. John’s on Tuesday, January 3rd from 2-4 pm, and 7-9 pm. There will be no formal funeral service.
