Emma Rosy Eckert

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Emma at Riverview, on Tuesday February 15, 2022, at the age of 99, after a brief battle with cancer.
Emma was born in rural Saskatchewan in 1923. The family moved frequently between Saskatchewan and Manitoba for many years before settling on a farm in Roblin MB.
Emma is survived by her youngest brother Garfield (Marjorie) of Edmonton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers; William (Margaret), Harold, sisters Beatrice (Jack) and Juanita (Paul), niece Paula, her roommate Tony, and many other longtime friends.
She moved to Winnipeg alone, as a teenager, with nothing and made a successful life for herself. She worked hard to send money home to her family. Emma worked at various jobs throughout her career before retiring at age 60. Any family members that moved to Winnipeg contacted Emma first and often lived with her until they settled. Emma was a very independent woman and used the bus to get around the city, never having gotten her driver’s license.
Emma was an avid supporter of a variety of charities. Her Lutheran faith was very important to her, and she was actively involved and a longtime member of Lutheran Church of Redeemer in Winnipeg.
Family was also an important part of Emma’s life and she always saw the positive in people and was never judgmental. She enjoyed organizing family outings and gatherings. Emma was a kindhearted gentle woman and had many lifelong friends. After moving, from her house to Donwood West she made many new friends and enjoyed activities/outings with them.
Emma was an avid traveler. She travelled throughout Canada, the USA as far away as China, Europe, the Holy Land, and tropical winter vacations. Many an evening after a family meal at her home out would come the slide show of her travels and family gatherings from years gone by. These slides produced many a laugh. Emma also enjoyed going to the “beach” the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach.
Emma was an avid gardener both at her house and at Donwood West. Emma oversaw the assigning the garden plots at Donwood. She enjoyed cooking, baking, golfing and was vessel of knowledge during the boy’s vs girl’s trivial pursuit game. We never ceased to be amazed at some of the answers she came up with. She did yoga weekly until the pandemic started and regularly read the paper, books, and her bible. She would always try to complete the daily crossword puzzles in the paper.
Our family would like to extend our deepest thanks to the Grace Hospital ER and Riverview Palliative Care Unit for giving Emma such compassionate care during her stay(s) .
Special thanks to Valerie who supported Emma and her family over the past months. Emma will be greatly missed by family and friends, but we celebrate in her joy of now being with her Lord.
