Obituary
With heavy hearts we sadly announce the passing of Bruce MacLeod Thomson, age 66 of Halifax (formerly Bracebridge Ontario), on July 18, 2022 in Palliative Care, VG Site of the QEII Hospital.
Born in Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, he was the only son of Mary Margaret (MacLeod) and the late Hugh MacIntosh Thomson.
Growing up in Halifax, Bruce attended Queen Elizabeth High School, Mount Allison University, Dalhousie Law, Harvard Divinity School, and Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. He began his ministry in the United Church of Canada in Economy and Five Islands, then to a three- point charge covering Burk’s Falls, Katrine and Magnetawan, Ontario. He went on to practice law with Stephenson Black, before opening his own law office in Bracebridge, Ontario. He became Duty Counsel Supervisor for Legal Aid Ontario. He was proud of his mentorship role to his many articling students and took great interest in their successes in law and life. Over the years, he was a contributing member in his community, and served on a number of boards, up to his recent retirement and move back to Halifax.
Education, work ethic, integrity and kindness to others were of great importance to Bruce. So was his family. He met and married his wife Lee and created a life together with five beautiful children. After our children were born he was confirmed in the Catholic Church and was an active member in St Joseph’s Parish, Bracebridge. He attended numerous activities with his children such as camping, cadets, rock concerts (always with ear protection); sports events such as basketball, and bike racing, and music lessons including piano, guitar and lots and lots of drum lessons whenever he could be there. Bruce had a passion for history. We remember many family vacations, and outings, because inevitably it became a history tour (normally with a few cemetery visits in the itinerary) and he was our personal guide. A man full of knowledge, never lost a moment to impart his wisdom or sage advice on anyone who would listen.
Bruce was a faithful son, husband, father, friend and colleague. If he said he was going to do something- he always followed through with his commitments and responsibilities and expected no less from others.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 28 years, Antoinette Lee Zena (Russell) Thomson; sons, John William, James Duncan; Alexander Hugh; daughters, Allison Katherine and Mary Margaret; his mother, Mary; and many family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Besides his father Hugh, Bruce was predeceased by his step-father, Francis J. Himsl.
A Private family graveside service will be held at St John’s Cemetery in Scotsburn, NS.
