COUGHTRY, Arthur Stuart

Arthur Stuart Coughtry, formerly of Weston Ontario, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2002 in his 87th year.
Arthur was born in 1935 to John & Margaret (Tompkins) Coughtry in St.Lambert, Quebec. After moving to Ontario as a teen, and graduating from highschool, Arthur took up his passion in photography by attending Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University), and graduated in 1958 with a diploma in Photographic Arts.
After graduation, Arthur worked as a photographic assistant to various photographers in Ontario and abroad, focusing on portraits, architectural imagery, and photojournalism. Between December 1961 and January 1962, he had an exhibition of his photography at the Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, “Arthur Coughtry: Photographs of Centre Island, Scarborough Bluffs, and the Don Valley”. Later that year, Arthur worked for the Brandon Sun as a Press Photographer.
Subsequent to his work out west, he returned to Toronto to begin a career as a staff photographer for various aviation firms in the area, including De Havilland Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft, and Spar Aerospace. Photographing many of the key advancements in Ontario’s aviation industry at the time, including the DHC Twin Otter and the Canadarm.
In 1968, while working at De Havilland Aircraft, Arthur met Aileen Hogan and they wed later that year, going on to have 2 children, Samantha and Pauline.
Some of Arthur’s favourite activities were cycling down the Humber River trails, camping and fishing in Magnetawan, and listening to some jazz while enjoying a pint at the pub.
Arthur was predeceased by his beloved wife Aileen, brother Graham Coughtry, and brother in-law Jack Hogan. He is survived by daughter Samantha & husband Steven Thayer, daughter Pauline & husband Jason Herborth, grandchildren Zachary, Erin, Kiersten, and Avery. Also fondly remembered by Margaret Hogan, and his nieces Jacqueline and Aileen and their families.
Cremation has taken place, interment at Riverside Cemetery, Toronto, a later date.
