WO RW MacQuarrie Retired 19432021

M.W.O. RW MacQuarrie (Retired)
1943-2021
M.W.O. RW MacQuarrie (Retired) – 77, Bible Hill.
Wayne MacQuarrie, a thirty-two year veteran of the Canadian Military
Police and recipient of the Special Services Medal for his service
with NATO in Europe, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 10,
2021, after a heroic battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was
a loving grandfather, father and husband, loyal brother and cherished
friend. Wayne was a son of the late Peter and Muriel (Dwyer)
MacQuarrie and grew up in Onslow Mountain with his sister, Margie and
brother, Charles.
Joining the Military at age 17, he served across Canada and
internationally and developed a reputation as a by-the-book,
principle-driven and team-oriented leader. Wayne will be missed
unconditionally by his loving wife and dance partner, Margaret
(MacKinnon) MacQuarrie, whom he met while stationed outside of
Montreal, QC in 1968. The strength of their partnership has shone
throughout their 51 years of marriage.
He was so incredibly proud of his two boys, Peter and Greg,
in whom he instilled his strong family values and ignited his same
love of the outdoors. The boys will miss their hero and role
model but know they will always have a piece of their Dad with them at
all times, and especially in the legacy that he and Marg created and
fostered with his cherished Camp. He was also a loyal ally and partner
in mischief to his grandchildren Matthew, Brandi, Morgyn and
Matthieu. Even as his mobility lessened, and his voice
softened, it was still so clear how he perked up and the spark was
bright when he was around his grandchildren.
Wayne was in his element in the woods, especially at his
beloved camp at Clear Lake. From annual deer hunts to salmon trips to
his friend’s incredible camp on the Gander River to moose
hunting on the top of Andrew’s Mountain in Cape Breton,
Wayne was always accompanied by his best friend/brother, Charles –
both with a shared loyalty to the woods and each other. Wayne was
athletic and loved to compete. He was a top-level fastball pitcher who
never shied to dust a hitter off the plate. He played and coached
hockey, including his sons’ teams for many years. He also
was an avid curler and represented both Nova Scotia and Prince Edward
Island at the Canadian Police Curling Championship. He always brought
his best, whether it was baseball, curling, broomball, Phase 10 or
crib. Not surprising is that right up to his last weeks he was playing
crib and playing to win against his amazing team caring for
him.
Our family wishes to thank the incredible caregivers
(Louessa, Ardith, Barb, Diane and Judith) who made it possible for him
to remain at home in his final years and also for his family doctor,
Dr. Singh, and the palliative care team of Dr. Smith and Lisa
Weatherbee for their compassionate and excellent care.
Wayne will be missed by everyone who knew him and who are now
better off for his influence on our collective lives. Whether as a
friend, a teammate, a brother, an uncle, an outdoor companion, a
grandfather, a Dad or a husband – he was simply reliable,
extremely principled, loyal, fun and amazing.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Marg; sons, Peter and Greg;
daughters-in-law, Michelle and Anna; grandchildren, Matthew, Brandi,
Morgyn and Matthieu.
