Valerie Wilma Hartigan
May 15, 1942 – May 14, 2021
Valerie’s family is very saddened to announce her passing on May 14, 2021 at Dartmouth General Hospital after a short battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and cancer. Born on May 15, 1942 in Timmons, ON to the late Kathleen & William Hitch. Valerie moved to Dartmouth at a young age where she spent her youth & went on to attend Halifax Ladies College where she received her secretarial diploma. It was during her career as a secretary at Admiral Westphal Junior High School that she met her husband & best friend, Paul. This was the beginning of 40 happy & loving years together – and when 2+2 became 4. At home, Mom was always there to support her two children through their school years and beyond. Nanny was well known for her special chocolate birthday cakes and her family favourite chocolate chip cookies! Family Christmas dinners were one of Mom’s many specialties, her culinary skills were top notch and we will always cherish our holiday gatherings. A highlight of many summers was the annual “pilgrimage to the shrine” of Fenway Park in Boston to cheer on our beloved Red Sox. Mom was the ultimate trip planner & we would still be looking for the hotel if it weren’t for her expert organizational skills. Mom also planned several trips across the country to Whitehorse, Yukon with Dad to visit their grandchildren. A wonderful wife, Mom, Nanny & sister – she will be missed more than we can ever express. Valerie is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Paul; son, Jeff (Shelly); daughter, Kelly (Glenn); brother, Bill (Gladys); grandchildren Bria, Lennox & Autumn; sister in law, Eileen; brother in law, Frank (Donna); brother in law, Jerry; brother in law, Steve (Leanna); and many nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks to all the staff of 5 East at DGH. At a later date, there will be a celebration of life for Mom and a family mass at St. John XXIII Church. Online condolences can be sent to www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca.
Mom took great pride in her family & her legacy will live on in all of us. Rest in peace beautiful Nanny – we love you.
